Advantages: Easy to play...little chance of dying!
Disadvantages: Poor graphics and not very challenging
Bolt for the ds was released in the UK on the 13 Feb 2009.
I purchased this game for my son (he's 6) and after seeing the adverts and taking him to see the film, he really wanted the game. He likes dogs and superhero type things so seemed a good combination for him.
I would say this game is defiantly aimed at the 5 to 10 year old age bracket, although I say 5 as there is quite a lot of reading to tell you what to do, so suitable from an age when your child can read basic instruction.
I am reviewing the game from his opinion and my own (however I have not yet completed the game!)
*The game*
The game is only slightly based on the film as in the film he has no superpowers, instead, the game is one of the episodes in which Penny, Bolt's owner has to save her father from the green-eyed Calico.
There is the main game, a multiplayer option (which I have not tried) and a mini-game called Rhino's mission.
*Rhino's mission*
made all of us laugh, for those with pet hamsters with exercise balls you will know how this appeals to children. The mission is to make your way around the mazes and past obstacles within a specified time. This was easy for me, however there is a choice of easy or hard. Never the less my son enjoys it. Not sure how many levels there are I got to level 5 and think there were still more!
*Main game*
Play as Bolt and use superpowers, including laser vision, ground pound and sonic bark to devastate opponents. The games gives clear instructions on how to make these powers work and when you need to use them, eg. laser vision.
Or you can play as Penny and use hacking skills and wheel-bar as seen in the movie to outwit enemies. There are five exciting locations around the world, including Italy and Russia. You have to complete different missions which your are prompted on screen how to do so no real problem solving.
Like I said I am yet to complete the game, mainly because I got bored, my son hasn't as he has been too busy in the school holidays.
This game is defiantly for children as it has the added bonus of not letting you walk off the edge to die! a real plus point for the younger player!
It does have its downfalls, the graphics and the camera angles are quite poor, would expect more from it being a good Disney film. It is not very challenging as you are told how to complete each mission.
In conclusion
Bolt is a good game if your child likes the film! It won't be the kind of game that you would pick up and play when they arn't looking! but it also won't be the kind of game where they complain that they keep dying or are stuck. I feel Disney could have done better with the graphics and the sound quality on the game, however that's my opinion, my 6 year old loves it!!!
A good game for a beginner gamer!
Summary: Bolt is a good game for a beginner!
