Cake Mania (DS)
Advantages: Lots of fun, anything based around cake is good by me
Disadvantages: Extreme difficulty and problems with control
It's no secret to my family and friends that I'm a big fan of cakes. It's for this reason that a handheld video game based entirely around cakes caught my eye. Partly due to this, and partly due to my unexpected enjoyment of the Gordon Ramsey cooking game, I picked up Cake Mania.
The premise is, you run a cake shop, and you absolutely MUST sell lots and lots of cakes to compete with the big supermarket that's opened up nearby. So it's time to bake bake bake.
There are two main views, which are the kitchen and the shop. In the shop, you encounter your customers, who will request annoyingly specific cakes that you then have to make in the kitchen. Making cakes is fairly tricky at first, but you soon get used to the different stages involved - just in time for the difficulty level to ramp up yet again.
The basic gameplay is lots of fun, and you will find yourself enjoying the frantic rushing around to please your customers. However, it does get very difficult very soon, as customers get increasingly impatient and picky, and their orders get more and more complex - a 3 tiered wedding cake, anyone? And if you mess up, you have to start again, wasting money on the incorrect cake and of course wasting precious time.
I learnt a lesson from this. If I ran a cake shop, I would take orders in advance, then make them in my own time for the customers to pick up later. The business model demonstrated in Cake Mania is just a recipe for stressed out staff and annoyed customers!
Although this game is lots of fun to pick up and play, it's certainly not without flaws. For me personally, I found that it got far too hard very soon, as my improving skills didn't seem to match up with the steep learning curve. There's also a bit of a control problem in that a lot of the icons on the screen are absolutely TINY. This makes it incredibly frustrating when you accidentally click on say the wrong ingredient, spoiling your cake and greatly reducing your score.
Overall, I like cake and I like Cake Mania. If you like the sound of it, be aware before you buy that it can be frustrating, and very tough at points!
Summary: Good... but very hard
