Cooking Mama 2: Dinner With Friends (DS)
Advantages: Hours of gameplay, bright and colourful graphics, variety of dishes
Disadvantages: Annoying sound
Being a big fan of the first Cooking Mama game, when the new one came out I was super excited and as I found it near my birthday, my hints obviously paid off, as I was given it as a birthday present! However, currently it can be bought for around £15 on both Amazon and GAME, which is a pretty fair price considering the amount of things it has improved on and has to do throughout it.
It's rated 3 plus, and I totally agree as everything is simple to understand and just requires some basic reading skills. Even that probably wouldn't be needed though, as generally the instructions on the screen simply follow an arrow or a hand telling you what to do. It's definitely a game anyone could enjoy, even though it probably is centered as more of a girly game.
Cooking Mama 2's gameplay is exactly the same as the previous, you are a character who is guided by Mama, a cooking whiz who is training you with all her favourite recipes! She watches you complete tasks, using your DS stylus to guide the characters hands (the only part we ever see in the game of the person we're controlling) to do various tasks which can be chopping vegetables, cutting meat, blending, frying, mixing or grilling. All of which will lead up to making a dish.
There are many different dishes within this game, and you are bound to see one of your favourite dishes included. Some of the dishes you will see in the game are pizza, meatloaf, popcorn, ice cream, kebabs, scones, peanut butter, squid fried rice, churros, waffles and much much more. There must be at least 80 dishes! How many tasks the dishes have can really depend on how difficult making it can be, for example something like churros will require you to do 7 things while making popcorn only 1. The only annoying fact about these dishes is that you cannot see the difficulty rating for them before you play!
After you've done all the tasks to make the dish, your dish will be scored by Mama out of a 100. These scores are based on how well you've done each of the tasks (which is shown at the end of each of them with a score of Failed, Well Done or Perfect!). I'm forever trying to get all of a 100 on all the dishes in the game, and this is one of the great things about Cooking Mama 2, it always gives you something to do!
Aside from the fact that I am constantly trying to get Gold Medals in just the Cooking With Mama section, there is also a variety of other side games you can play, which also have medal ratings! I've been playing this game for at least 2 years now, and I still haven't got all of them! I like the fact that there is the option available to make a Photo Diary to, as after a particularly difficult dish, when I get a Perfect mark I love being able to put them in there!
There is the Let's Cook option which gives you the chance to cook for Mama's friends and family, unlocked throughout the game. In this little section, you basically do the same as you did in Cooking With Mama, except now the written instructions are taken away and you get thrown straight into making the dish. This option is great for those who've played Cooking Mama to death and want to play without having to read the instructions each time they want to do the next task!
If you don't feel like cooking a full dish, then there is the Cooking Contest, with really fun little minigames for you to challenge yourself with. This usually means doing a task as well as you can in the time given, trying to do as much as you can e.g. breaking the most eggs. Then after you've played it, you can go back again and again trying to beat your scores!
One phrase of warning about the Cooking Mama game though has to be this: Beware of the bonus stars. They are the most addictive thing about the game! If you happen to do a task really well or quickly, you will be rewarded by a bonus star, if you collect 5, you are able to get a gift which will unlock a special stamp in Cooking with Mama mode or object in Lets Cook mode. Even after playing the game for so long, I haven't been able to unlock all of the items and am constantly trying to get bonus stars! However, I do like this add on to the game, as it does give me something to try and achieve to other than just the gold medals.
Usually the things you will unlock in the game are used for the customising aspect of Cooking Mama. Generally this will revolve around changing the colour or design of certain utensils or changing how Mama dresses by her clothes or accessories.
Cooking Mama definitely has a distinctive design to it which really engages the audience. The cartoony happy characters combined with the bright colours is enough to draw anyone in and keep them playing. This is probably why it got rated a 3 plus, as it definitely is child friendly. I like that everything is cartoony to, as it makes everything look much sharper and neat! Everything is well developed and no glitches have happened to me so far when playing the game. Sometimes the instructions can be hard to understand, but this is nothing a little practice (using the handy Practice feature for specific tasks!) wouldn't help.
The one thing I cannot stand however, is the music of the game. While okay for about 5 minutes, eventually you will just have to turn the sound down. The music in this game is one of the most annoying things I have ever had to listen to. The backing track is super repetitve and combined with the characters voices, it makes for extremely annoying gameplay. One thing I must say though, is that they do have well matched sound effects for all the tasks.
Overall, I would say this is a great child or adult friendly game that anyone can enjoy. It will keep you busy for hours on end as you'll always be trying to beat your score or get all the medals that you can! Aside from the annoying sound, this game is definitely one of my favourites and I use it for those long car and train journeys where you need to stop yourself from falling asleep!
Summary: Great game with loads of hours of gameplay combined with colourful graphics
