Cooking Mama (DS)
Advantages: Passes the time. Occupies kids on long journeys
Disadvantages: Not beginning or end, so if you like story based games. Not for you
Centres around the idea that you are trying to cook a meal, as well as mama does, and are trying to gain the highest score you can by doing each task the best.
There is a selection of meals you can make when you first play the game, including drinks and desserts. Then as you complete the meals, more recipes are unocked and new ways to use the stylus to prepare food are introduced, which keeps the game interesting.
You tap the screen with the stylus to chop, and slide the stylus in the correct direction to slice and so on. There are different ways in which the meals are cooked etc.
A lighthearted take on cooking with a fun character, mama guides you through each step and before each one there is a quick description of what you have to do, but theres a time limit, so be quick!
Its generally a fun game, theres not real pressure to just win, if you dont do so well, its not a big deal, you just do it again. However, if you are feeling a little competive, you can play against someone else who has a DS with you by wireless play, and have contests to see who can, peel the carrot fastest etc. Only one of the players need to have the game, so you can compete even without it.
The game is bright and colourful, and will definately keep kids occupied for hours on ling journeys, just be prepared for them to be asking you what all the random ingredients are! This is another time when DS wireless play comes into its own.
makes full use of the stylus, perfect game for the DS (and the wii). Although i would say that learning to cook using this game isnt advised, it is surely one way to get small children interested in the preperation of food, and where their food come from and what goes into meals, even if it is on a most simple level. For example, with meat dishes the game requires you to slice a fish or to grind meat to make mince.
Also, its not really an adventure game with a set story, so you can jump into and out of the game as you wish. I tend to have fads on it when im playing it all of the time, and then it could be months before i even play it again. Theres no need to rush to complete it, its just something to pass an hour or so away.
Its a great game for casual gamers, if you like games to have a beginning middle and end then this may not be the best game. I cant really say that i have any complaints, its one of the better games that have been made for the DS ( and the Wii infact) so i would reccomend anyone to give it a try, kids really enjoy this game, and adults too!
Summary: Test to see whose the fastest and best!Fun to play, jump in and out of the game as often as you like
