Advantages: Great graphics and sound, good gameplay
Disadvantages: A bit too easy to complete
This review is for the Nintendo DS game, Crash of the Titans, developed by Amaze Entertainment published by Sierra Entertainment. The game is a follow-up to the arcade Crash Bandicoot.
There are 23 levels of this arcade game to work through, all in 3D, and is similar in principle to the earlier games in the series. Each of the levels is quite substantial and there are lots of hidden extras which do take some time to locate.
The style of fighting has changed from previous games however, you now control the enemies for part of the fight, and you now attack the opponents using various skills rather than just running into them. You develop your skills and strength throughout the game by collecting various tokens.
Controlling the game is generally quite easy, especially as the graphics flow very well. The only element which can be a little frustrating is when you're fighting enemies, as the controls can sometimes be a bit confusing and things don't go quite as you'd planned. However these aren't major problems, just can be a little irritating whilst mid game.
Although there is quite a lot of exploration to do in this game, the difficulty level seems to be pitched quite low. If you are even a reasonable competent games player, you are likely to complete the game in not much time at all, so the game really arguably wasn't worth the original price tag of thirty pounds. There are some extras to find, and you play through the game to find more secret areas, but it's not likely that you'd want to.
In addition, there are quite a few mini games to be played, and these are generally fun and add quite a lot to the game. Some of these use the stylus and other features of the Nintendo DS, and although most are played just once, they're fun to work through.
The graphics in the game are superb, and they are noticeable as you see the various different levels. The graphics are also fluid and getting the right angle, which can be a problem in 3D games such as this, isn't a problem. The background music and sounds effects are also very good, lots of variety, and both the graphics and music in this game add lots to the atmosphere of the game.
The game retailed for 29.99 pounds but is currently available on Amazon for 9.95 pounds. If you're happy with a second hand copy, at time of writing, these can be found for around five pounds on sites such as eBay and Amazon. The game is rated as 7+, so is suitable for all other than younger children.
Overall, this is a reasonable game, possibly only really let down by it being a bit easy to complete. It could be a good game for a younger player to start with, as they've got a good chance of finishing it before becoming bored. The graphics and sound in this game are very good, and overall the game really is quite polished. Given that the game is at time of writing available for ten pounds, this isn't at all bad value.
Summary: Definitely worth a look, good for novice gamers
