Finding Nemo: Escape to the Big Blue (DS)
Advantages: It lets you play with some of the characters from the film
Disadvantages: Game Play, Graphics and everything else
Another game I was given for free recently was Finding Nemo and the Escape to the Big Blue game for the Nintendo DS console.
At first I admit looking at the box of the game it seems to offer you great graphics which you might expect in a bigger console and that is not the case with the game at all.
The game begins with you picking one of three characters. You can choose Bloat, Bubbles or Peach.
You begin by choosing one of the 4 mini games and unfortunately you have to pick the first one otherwise you cannot unlock the others. You are stuck in the bubble in the first game and have to direct this bubble back to the ocean.
Your character is inside and you have to collect tokens along the way but also avoid various problems like the seagull that will come and burst the bubble costing you one of your lives. You have five lives and if you fail to reach the ocean before you lose all your lives you end up restarting that level again.
Whatever score in terms of value of tokens you accumulate you get to keep and they can be used later to unlock new characters, backgrounds and more.
The second game is my biggest problem in terms of how the game has been done and what it does to you as a player. Every time you start a new game you are told instructions on how to play each mini game and in the second game you're told to blow out bubbles by blowing into the microphone.
You have to try and protect your character but also burst the bubbles and aim for a score of 500 to complete this task. The problem with this game is that you are always blowing against the bubbles and the problem is that you get dizzy.
You keep blowing because you have to in order to reach your target and you get so light headed so you have to keep pausing the game to continue and for me that is not good enough and can be a huge problem.
The game has the characters from the film involved and there is a story there as well for you to work through using the various mini games but the game in all honesty is completely boring and lacklustre.
The first game struggles to keep within the guidelines of the game. If you tell the bubble to go right it takes forever at times for that move to take place. Every time you reach a curb you have to go to a new destination and the game takes 15 seconds to load that scene up and that can also take forever.
When it comes to the overall speed of other characters in the game the seagulls who act as your enemies and people to avoid they are actually pretty tame and slow which is unlikely.
The graphics are average at best they offer very little for the game because even the ocean looks fake and that tells you how poor the game is. The bubble you are in for one of the mini games is poor and looks really out of shape and not even round either.
The game offers very little as well for the tokens because they are round and blue but they perhaps could have done them as fish or something worthy to catch because the game would then have a more fun purpose.
I think the game has struggled in everything from the graphics, game play and overall idea behind the game. I believe the game should focus more of Nemo as the centre point but it doesn't and perhaps they could have made it more fun by trying to make it entertaining rather than boring repetitive game play.
I would give this game 2 out of 10 and you can still purchase this game on the internet and if I was a parent buying this for a child I would look at more recent games and ones which actually provide the main character throughout.
Summary: A very poor attempt at a game
