Following Harvest Moon DS, this game has been adapted to suit different target markets and give girls a chance to experience farming and living in a town from their own genders point of view.
The game differs from the original, with 11 eligible bachelors including the harvest moon FOMT characters. Unlike the original, marrying the FOMT characters doesn't end the game (which is a plus because all the bachelors in the DS game are old and ugly!). There is also the addition of a special character, named Skye, who you can marry. However you can only see him at midnight so wooing him is difficult.
The DS cute version also has new random events allowing you to interact with the villagers more.
A big difference within the DS cute game is the ability to have a girl OR boy child, which is a new feature within the harvest moon series.
Within the game, you have to work as a farmer in a ranch, in the Forget-Me-Not Valley. This can be achieved by growing and harvesting crops, managing live stock, mining and foraging. Whilst doing all of this, you have to also rescue the 101 harvest sprites in the game in order to be able to hire them to help you out in the game. Although hiring sprites to help you out isn't a new feature in the series, medals are used to hire them, and these can be accumulated through gambling in the harvest sprite casino. However, a disadvantage of the new harvest sprite system, is that only one team can be hired at a time, for example, you can only have the harvest sprites harvesting your crops and not water them at the same time.
In order to marry a bachelor, you must get their love points beyond 60,000, and witness all of their heart events. You can raise their affection and friendship by giving them their favourite foods and items. You must also get the right building upgrades and purchase the big bed from tv shopping. However, the downside to marrying in this game is that you must have rescued 60 harvest sprites (which unlocks the harvest goddess) before you can be married.
Mining has been developed in this game, with four caves which you can mine in, one of which includes cursed accessories and tools, as well as the Princess Keira, who is on the 255th floor of the third mine. The fourth mine contains "wonderful stones", which after collecting seven of, you are granted a wish which ranges from increased profit, to making your live stock more affectionate towards you.
Another element in the game is the ability to use the touch screen on the DS. This allows you to go through the numerous menus, as well as the nine harvest sprite channels with ease. Also there are several mini-games, in which allows you to brush, pet, sheer and milk your animals. This can however become a downside as although you can interact with your animals in the traditional way (without the touch-screen) it is not as effective as it takes 3 times longer to gain hearts this way. Once you start getting a lot of animals, using the mini-games become tedious and can detract from the fun of the game.
Overall the game, in my opinion, is a huge improvement to the original harvest moon DS, with the addition to the special characters and the new events. However, the biggest improvement would be the fact that the majority of the annoying glitches within the original DS game, have been fixed. Although there are some minor glitches, these do not affect the game as much as the original glitches. I recommend playing this game, especially if you are a girl as you can choose between to different looks in the beginning, and later on customize your clothes and house which makes it more fun.
