Advantages: a range of different modes to play

Disadvantages: Can get boring over time

Mario kart DS is an excellent racing game for the DS. Like previous mario kart games, the main feature is the grand prix mode where players race to achieve points in order to gain a gold, silver or bronze cup. Winning cups also unlocks characters and additional cups to play for.

There are five modes to play in the game:

Grand prix: Usual mario kart racing, the play tries to gain the most points in four races in order to gain cups and unlock more features.

Time trials: Players try to get around the track in the fastest time possible, best times can be saved.

VS mode: in this mode, players race against computerised players or others in multiplayer mode.

Battle mode: In battle mode there is a choice of battles, shine runners and balloon battle. Balloon battle is where you must try to pop the opponents balloons before they pop yours. In shine runners, the objective is to collect the most shine sprites

Mission mode: in mission mode, player have to complete numerous missions before progressing on the next set of missions. The missions are rated in ranks.

Overall, mario kart DS is an excellent game which remains playable after completing the courses set. The variety of modes give players a change from the usual grand prix racing. The game features the usual item boxes which range from boosts to bombs. Throught the course of the game, mario kart never gets boring.
