Advantages: detailed, lots of extras, free pedometer
Disadvantages: /
You can't turn the television on or open a magazine now without being told to change the way you eat in order to better your lifestyle. Quite often this demanding attitude can annoy me, but when I saw the Health Coach 'game' for the Nintendo DS, I couldn't help myself and just had to buy it!
When you first switch on the game, you're asked to fill in some information, such as your height and weight. The console then calculates your BMI and metabolic rate after you've answered a few simple questions about your lifestyle. Afterwards, it's time to begin. You're not alone though to suss out the game; you'll be accompanied on your journey by a little stick person, either male or female (depending on your own gender). I call her Daisy.
The Coach is split into two sections; Daily and Backpack. In the Daily, you can select up to six challenges each day. These include minute challenges like instant situps and exercise, as well as 24-hour challenges like finding and trying a new recipe. Here you can also fill in the foods you have eaten that day by selecting those closest or with the same calorie values from the pictures provided. You can also fill out the minutes of exercise that day you have participated in, and how strenuous it is too. With the Coach, you are provided with a little white pedometer. After wearing this throughout the day, you can also add the steps you've done to your chart too.
In the Backpack section, you can edit the personal information you provided at the start, and can also follow several coaching lessons, as well as taking in many tips provided for you. There are also some games and quizzes too.
This Health Coach is a fantastic way to stay on top of things, especially if you greet your little stick friend each day. I like to try and beat my previous step count from the day before, and seeing it logged on a chart, with the line creeping upwards, is a great boost. I paid just over £20 for my game on Amazon.co.uk, though it's priced at around £25 in stores. It's definitely worth a buy, and I may even look into buying Weight Loss Coach, which is also made by Ubisoft, which is to be released soon.
