Advantages: Achievable
Disadvantages: Too repetative for some
I bought this game back in April thinking it would be similar to Professor Layton however I was wrong and was therefore put off thinking it wasn't my sort of game. I recently got round to playing it, as did my family so now thought it was a good time to write a review!
As you can see from the picture the case is predominantly brown with a large magnifying glass showing a missing person. This lets us know a little about the game as it tells us it is a detective game. There is a large title at the top and it tells us it is part of the Mystery Case Files series which I believe to be available on the PC aswell.
So onto the game, Mr Phil.T.Rich has gone missing and basically it is your job to find him! This is where I got confused but the game is infact one of those games where you find things in a number of rooms. After you have found a number of things you get a certain chunk of information about Phil and you also usually get to complete a little puzzle which allows you a breather from the item hunting. The game is very repetative and you find yourself finding items over and over again. As you progress through the game it gets harder and harder, giving you more items to find and making them harder to spot. You are given hints which are very helpful and therefore make the game achievable. As you proceed through the game you are given tools which make items easier to find such as torches.
For the DS, the graphics are quite good. There are a number of colours in the game and the pictures are all neat and tidy. Due to the type of game, there are not a great deal of special effects but when these are used they are of a good standard.
As you will see on the case this game is a 3+, my niece got hooked on this and she is 8. She managed to complete the majority of it herself however she did need help through some stages. There is nothing unsuitable in the game for a child of that age though so you can allow them to play it without keeping an eye on them. Aswell as my niece, myself, my mother and my boyfriend all got hooked on this too which suggests that it is very addictive to those of any age! Personally, I did not enjoy this as much as Professor Layton however, I imagine that is due to personal preference.
I quite enjoyed this game. What I really liked about it was that it was achievable and there were never any sections where you found yourself completely stuck and unable to proceed. Although it is quite repetative, I enjoyed this as you always knew what you were meant to be doing. The small mini games that hit you after each level are enjoyable and help to break up the game well. Although there are no hints available on these small games they are completable due to being fairly easy. The game did not take long to complete, all of us had finished within a week and that was with us sharing it all around. I probably would not play it again unless I had nothing else to play but that is due to personal opinion and is nothing to do with the game itself, for example I know both my niece and my mother are keen to play again.
I would recommend this game to any adult who plays the DS in particular because from experience I know there are few games out there for the older generations. It is shaped to those who enjoy mystery games and I would recommend it to those who enjoy item hunting games on the internet. It is currently available from around £17.98 from both Amazon and Game however I would recommend looking on ebay.
Summary: Good game, worth a play
