Disadvantages: A little too easy. Too short.
New Super Mario Bros - DS.
This is an interesting game. I class myself as a Mario playing expert, truly one of the best. I started back in the days of the NES and could complete the game without losing a life, yes I was that good.
So this game, let me start of with saying it is great, the colours, graphics, music, it is Mario at its best.
The major downfall though is that it is far too easy. I had played it for sometime before seeing if I could play through it in one sitting. I managed to do this in 2 hours 15 minutes. Granted I did lose a few lives along the way but that doesn't mean it is any harder than the original. I don't like the fact that you get continues, not that you need them because getting lives is so frequent and easy. It takes away from the game a little I feel. I wish there was a hardcore mode for those that didn't need to find a power up five times in one level. The original you were lucky if you found one in a level, let along finding any lives!
Still the game does shine and is a lot of fun. Multiplayer is a great addition to the game. Beating friends, chasing stars really relaxes you and makes you forget about the world you are in. You are just enjoying it, that is what games should be about.
The dungeons are well detailed but far too easy, as our the bosses of each level.
I'll say it is worth playing the game if you are a Mario fan. It is nice to see Nintendo trying new concepts. Hopefully they'll make a sequel in the near future. Multiplayer is excellent and can make the game worth owning on its own if you know someone with a DS. Only one of you needs the Kart to get the game working across WiFi.
5 out of 5
Summary: One of the best platformers on the DS, well worth considering even if you aren't a fan of Mario.
