Pokemon SoulSilver (DS)
Advantages: fantastic remake of a classic game, vastly improved graphics
Disadvantages: not very original/creative
The first Pokemon game I ever played was Pokemon Gold for the Gameboy Color. The second one was Pokemon Silver, also for my Gameboy Color. So when I heard that they were re-releasing Pokemon Gold/Silver for the Nintendo DS, I figured I just had to look into it. I'm really glad I did, as this is by far my favorite Pokemon game of all-time. I decided to go with SoulSilver over HeartGold, simply because I was more interested in catching Lugia this time around.
The first thing to note about this game is that approximately 75% of it is copied from the original Silver version, so if you want an entirely new adventure, this isn't it. However, the 25% of improvements is still a lot of new stuff. In addition, the graphics are amazingly better than the original. In a way it is rather remarkable, considering every person, every building, ever patch of grass, is in the same spot, yet the graphics in SoulSilver are so much more in depth. This game also is one of those that just sucks you right into the adventure and makes it addictive, it hurts when you put it down as you get hooked very quickly with it.
I guess you're probably interested in hearing about some of the new improvements. Well first of all, all of the gyms are completely different, a very cool change. For example, many of the gyms include 3D aspects to them. Like the first gym is now fought entirely high up above the ground. It's pretty cool because it shows they are at least making an effort to make use of the DS's capabilities, and it allows for some good gameplay. There are also some more side quests, and the main quest requires you to do a couple of things you didn't do in the original, particularly in the Kanto region from what it seems.
Now onto some of the reasons you might not want to purchase this game. The only one that really comes to mind is if you didn't enjoy the original Silver/Gold games. OR if you did enjoy them but just aren't interested in playing through them again (though it really doesn't feel like the same game in my opinion, feels very new and fresh to me). For me though, I loved the idea of remaking these and so SoulSilver might be my favorite Pokemon game to date.
Summary: I couldn't put the game down until I had beaten it!
