I'm a huge animal lover amongst other things and I must confess to being quite a bit of a nintendo DS junkie! I'll try any DS game if it promises to have cute animals in it but I have been bitterly disapointed in the past with the standards of most of these games. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this game.
Pony Friends is a game published by Eidos Interactive and has been out for a few years now, there's also a sequel to it: Pony Friends 2. This review is on the original Pony Friends. This game is aimed at mainly young horse loving girls but I can't see why anyone can't enjoy it. Pony Friends is extremely cute and has lovely detailed graphics, you can either choose a pony from a list of breeds (Camargue, Hokkaido, Fjord, Haflinger, Mustang and Connemara) or customise your own - which is a lot more fun!
Pick the coat colour of your pony, do you want him to have dapples or socks? Maybe your dream pony is grey with a flowing mane? It's up to you, you can choose from a vast array of coat colours and patterns. You can decide whether you want your pony to have a long mane and if he should have a star or a blaze on his face. Once you've made your perfect pony you can choose whether you want it to be a boy or girl, what type of food is its favourite treat, let your imagination run wild!
Once you've "made" your pony you get to ride him on trail rides, the scenery is lovely with each trail being different from the rest. It is on these trail rides that you can take photos of other animals, pets such as cats or wild mooses that live in the forests. When you take a photo of a new animal you will earn money, this money can be spent on caring for your pony, buying him things or even saving up to buy another pony to add to your stables! Taking photos will also unlock horsey accessories.
As will all animals, they need caring for and your pony is no acception. Feed him, groom him, bathe him and even clean out his hooves. The graphics are brilliant and you can see in detail all the little rocks in his hooves that you must tap out. Sometimes you'll even find rare coins and shells underneath all the dirt in his hooves.
Another thing you can do with your pony is take him to the races, this will improve his speed meter no end! If you are somebody who loves animals or horses, or maybe you have a horse crazy child then I'd say to get this game or it's sequel Pony Friends 2.
There are tons of horse games for the DS and the Pony Friends series seem to be some of the much better ones. The horses look, act and move like real horses and you'll soon get stuck in with looking after and customising your ponies. You can buy this game cheaply and at the moment it's on Amazon.co.uk for under £20.
It's a game that's obviously aimed not only at the younger crowd, but also kids of the female variety. But even though Pony Friends could and will be considered a girl's game, there's plenty of stuff to do that'll keep the target crowd engaged for days. Everything that players do will be documented in their scrapbook, where the game keeps track of all the things done and things that need to be done. The only item that appears to be missing is the ability to connect DS systems together to show off your pony to other players -- the only Wireless option in Pony Friends is a Demo Download feature. At least this item will give other DS owners a taste of Pony care.
