I was a huge fan of Rainbow Islands back in the day of the Commodore 64 and this game was big when it came out as a sequel to the brilliant Bubble Bobble. I wasted many an hour playing this game. So when I saw this game was available for the DS I was really excited to play it.
However I was left very disappointed as this game is just terrible.
Rainbow Islands is a platform game. You start with a little boy inside a bubble and drift around, you control him using your stylus. On the way up the level you draw rainbows to kill enemies.
Atari have somehow tried to 'jazz' up an already very good game, but they've instead made a simply awful game which is impossible to play. It's just lacking the fun of the original.
On the original game you weren't in a bubble and you 'fired' out mini rainbows which you climb up to move up the level. For the DS they made it so you have to 'draw the rainbows' using the stylus. Drawing the rainbows on the screen might sound fun... but it's really not. For some reason it's quite hard to do. I'm not an inexperienced gamer at all but this 'exciting little feature' was the very opposite.
I played it for about 10 minutes before turning it off, extremely annoyed because I couldn't even advance past the first level! I went back to it a week later but no, I could just not understand what on earth they have done with this once brilliant game.
I don't recommend this game at all, especially not with children as it's just impossible to play! I would spend your money elsewhere.
