Advantages: Keeps you entertained for ages
Disadvantages: Only allows 2 profiles to be created and can get boring once you've got to a high level on Career
This Scrabble game for the DS is a great game for people of all ages. It is the portable version of the board game and can keep you entertained for hours.
On this game, you can create up to two profiles. When you click through onto a profile, these options come up: Quick Game, Other Games, Career, Multiplayer and Options. Everything is really easy to navigate so don't worry if you are planning on buying this game for someone not used to playing on the DS.
Quick Game is exactly what it says on the label. If you just want to play a standard game of Scrabble, this is what you want to go on. You can work your way up in difficulty with the different players available. This is more fun than just playing against the computer at one difficulty and gives you a sense of achievement when you get to play against someone else by unlocking them. You can also play a multi-player game on here by selecting which players you want to play against.
On Other Games, you can pick between three word games to play. These are really fun and you have to unlock them by playing the game before a certain number of times or getting a certain score. This again makes you feel really good when you get a good score or when you unlock another game. I enjoyed playing all of the games. For me the final game is the most fun as I find anagrams difficult and the first two games are based on Anagrams. The last one is more like a remixed version of Boggle where you have to put letters together and make a word before the time runs out.
My favourite part of the Scrabble game overall is the Career option. On this you progress through three levels; Regional, National and World Scrabble tournaments. The levels get more and more difficult and you really do find yourself shouting at Angelina or Emily for putting down a Z on a triple letter! I've finally got to the World Tournament part but these games are timed and it's practically impossible to beat anyone on this round. Seriously, I have a lot of respect for your Scrabble abilities if you can beat anyone there! One more thing is that you can unlock different colour boards which makes a change from the standard blue one.
I haven't tried the multiplayer function as you have to have a friend that has a DS too and I don't! Unfortunately you can't do a multiplayer game with people in real life with only one DS. This is definitely something the Scrabble people need to improve on, as I'd love to play against my sister or boyfriend.
For any youngsters playing this game, I'd really recommend using the Junior function. You can put down a lot of random swear words which I didn't even know were in the dictionary so be careful with that!
Overall, although Scrabble does have some flaws, the 2007 version really isn't very expensive at around £8 on Amazon so if you enjoy the board game, try it out on the DS.
Summary: Overall totally worth it.
