Shrek SuperSlam (DS)
Advantages: lots of characters to play with, good storyline,
Disadvantages: Sometimes can get a little repetitive, after a long time
Shrek Superslam Ds is a shrek themed wrestling/fighting game for the Nintendo Ds, it was released in late 2005. I just had to buy this game because at the time it was released I really love the Shrek films that are of course very popular in both kids and adults. I also enjoy fighting style games such as Soul Calibur or Tekken, however this game is much less technical than these games, it still is a bit of fun to play.
This game features 18 of the Shrek Characters, here is a list of a few of the characters you can play in this game:
Puss in Boots
Red Riding Hood
Big Bad Wolf
Some of the characters in this game are unlocked as you play through the story, and achieve different tasks within the game. Each player has a different 'Slam Attack', this makes every character different to play with, some are harder to play with than others, for example Shrek has more strength than Donkey and his Slam Attack move is different. I think this gives the game more playability as when you complete it with your favourite character, you can try out another.
There are 3 different game modes within Shrek Superslam, they are:
King of the Hill
In this mode you try to stay on top of a hill for the longest while everyone tries to knock each other off, the longer you stay on the hill the more points you get, the first person to earn 30 points wins. This is one of my favourite modes on the game as it can be quite challenging, and it is fun to try knocking everyone off the hill.
In this mode you try to earn as many points as you can in a 2 minute period, you can earn more points by doing special moves you get points by hitting other players and lose points by getting hit yourself, the winner is the person who has the most points at the end of the 2 minutes.
In this mode you play against the computer and the aim of the game is to attack your opponents to gain points, each hit you get counts as a point, the person with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
There is also a rather amusing Story Mode on this game, all the characters voices in this story are from the original film and the story leads you to 'Fighting' with a range of different characters for different reasons, without giving too much away however I can give you a bit of the plot, Donkeys babies (the Dronkeys) will not go to sleep, so in an attempt to get them over, Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and Puss in Boots all tell the Dronkeys bed time stories which is basically where the stories in the game are taken from throughout the game.
This game has Multiplayer functions, however I did not ever use them as no one else I knew had this game, however single player mode provided me with a lot of game play, so I never felt the need to seek out another player.
The graphics on this game are what you would expect from the Nintendo ds, they are bright colourful and cartoon styled, they could be described as quite child-like compared to games available on the Xbox or Playstation, but I think that this is what attracts Nintendo fans as games are light hearted and fun to play/look at.
The music on this game is motivating and gets you pumped up to participate in the fights. It is upbeat and has a fast tempo and is not out of place compared to what you would normally find in a Nintendo game.
Price and availability
This is a rather old game and should be easy to buy very cheap, it costs around £12 on the internet, and should be very cheap in Game or HMV or Gamestop. I bought this game when it had just came out for around £30 in 2005.
This is a great game if you are a fan of the Shrek and like fighting style games. I would definitely recommend this game as a family as it is a more childish and cartoonish way to play fighting games. There is a great list of characters, a good game story, fun game modes and features within this game so it is hard to get bored of it.
