LEGO Batman: The Videogame (Wii)

The first Lego themed game my son received for the wii was the Batman video game which he received as a gift for Christmas 2010. We have since bought quite a few more Lego games but this is where it all began!
The case shows pictures of various Lego batman figures so you get an idea of the way in which characters are ... portrayed in the game. My son likes the cartoon element of the characters and I do think it helps make this game more child friendly. The game is loaded like any other wii game and up to four save files can be created should different players in the family wish to complete the game or re play the game.
To play the game both a wii remote and a nunchuck are required for each person who wants to play the game. To begin play you need to go to the bat cave where jumping in to a vehicle takes you to a selection of levels to complete. As you complete a chapter playing as Batman you will then unlock the corresponding chapter in Arkham Asylum where you have the opportunity to play through it from the villain's point of view which I think is a good thing which extends the longevity of the game and helps keep it interesting.
As you play through the levels you come across various villains some of which are more difficult to beat than others but I do feel as a general rule of thumb that this is one of the simpler Lego games to play after playing some of the other ones. As you go through the levels new characters become available for you to purchase from the bat cave computer but you need to have collected enough studs to purchase them and it makes sense that less known characters cost less studs with the more well known being quite a lot of studs. There are lots of codes available on the internet that you can input to the computer game which will give you characters, vehicles or invincibility and such like should you wish to cheat a little but we didn't do this often as it detracted from the fun of actually getting the characters yourself.
There are thirty levels in this game fifteen of which are hero levels and you play as Batman and Robin and the other fifteen are villain levels and so you play as people like the penguin and the joker. I think this does give good opportunities for play and especially in story mode. In story mode you are only able to work through levels in a pre selected order using characters which are pre selected also. This is of course fine as you know that the character or vehicle will be equipped to complete the level and that you may just have to find special suits or something to help you on your way. I have to say my son is much more aware of which things offer certain abilities and he can get quite frustrated with me as I stand around as Robin not really doing anything but then again I am pretty rubbish at computer games but do enjoy trying! You also have the option of playing levels in free play mode once they have been completed in story mode and by doing this you can use any characters you have available to you. My son likes to play free play mode where he tries to collect extra Lego studs to purchase other characters and explore levels at his own pace but I personally get bored by this as I feel there is no real purpose or aim to it!
I do like the fact that each level is pretty different in this game and that they are set in different surroundings be it on rooftops or on a river in a boar as I think this keeps you interested as you play. I do also like how some levels are played purely in a vehicle where you may need to drive around looking for targets or even fly a plane around as again I think variety is good for a game.
During the start and end of levels a short clip of story will be played out in a cartoon style by the Lego characters and my son really enjoys watching them and learning a little about the villain who he is going to be up against in the next level. I personally think that the graphics on the game are decent as they seem sharp and colourful but I would imagine a more serious gamer would perhaps argue about this with me! For my son and I though the graphics are enjoyable and do enhance game play.
The game box does suggest that you should be seven or older to play this game but my son was five and a half when he received this and my friend's daughter was younger than that. I see no reason if you manage it properly playing for short periods and such like why a child younger than seven cannot play and enjoy this game as it isn't scary and game play and controls are relatively simple.
This is a good game which my son will revisit despite the fact that he has completed all of the levels. Should you be interested in purchasing Lego Batman for the wii I can advise that it costs £13.35 currently at amazon but prices do fluctuate as my Uncle purchased it for £9.99 for Christmas 2010.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Stealth Force Edition (Wii)

Transformers is something that has stuck with me since childhood and with the glut of recent movies in the past few years the obsession has never really went away. What also has stuck with me is the never ending series of games related to the subject. Always towards the top of the games charts, especially at Xmas, these titles will be ... with us for some time yet. I usually tend to avoid games based on the latest movies as they tend to be made with little effort and the only objective of making as much money as possible from the tie in with the movie.
Transformers Dark of the Moon almost bucks that trend......only kidding, this is another terrible game with so many flaws I really do not know where to begin. This is a contender, no infact this could very well be, the single worst game I have ever had the utter misfortune of playing. These are hours of my life that I will not get back. It pains me to think.....
Where to start? Well the best piece of advice I can give is even if this game is in your local shop and they offer to pay you £100 to take it off their hands...don't. Your life is better not even knowing this game exists.
The first is the sheer ugliness of the game. It looks hideous on any tv screen and is offensive to anyone with even the slightest interest in graphics. There is blurring, slowdown and the graphics are so very very poor that you cannot even tell.
The main focus of the game involves driving around......well attempting to. The controls simply do not allow it, they prevent you from having any fun at all in fact. Moving the wii remote round and round with your eyes closed will give you about as much control as this game....thats how bad it really really is!
You do the same thing over and over again in the battle arenas, the same cheap tactics, the same set pieces, it really is awful, hideous and totally boring gameplay. You see the same things over and over and the gameplay is dull. Repetitive moves, matches and needs. There is little point to the game apart from destruction which is very unsatisfying. You will tire after the first one!
All in all this is the worst game on the Wii I have ever made. So badly made, so terribly put together and so darn right poor it should be a crime.
You have been warned!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Wii)

I purchased this game due to my love of all things X-Men, although the game is good - it is not as good as some of the games I have played on the Wii. Playing as Wolverine, you go through levels varying in difficulty, and at some points can become frustrated with having to figure out how to complete some of the challenges set that can be ... very hard.
The graphics are not as good as some of the Wii games out there, but they are satisfactory for the price that I bought it at. If you are looking for a game that is almost similar to an arcade walk about and kill people kind of game, then this is the game for you. Most of the levels just require you to walk about and kill the various enemies Wolverine faces. At the end of each level there is also a boss which Wolverine has to fight. Playing these can become difficult and often I would have to search how I was supposed to complete the level.
The game doesn't center around the movie and although it is the same plot, some points within it differ. Throughout the game you also gain experience points, and this allows you to upgrade certain factors in Wolverine making him more destructible or stronger in health.
Although this product has its cons, I would reccomend it to anyone who is a fan of X-Men and looking for a Wii game different to the other types of Wii games that are out there.
