Wii Sports Resort with Wii MotionPlus Accessory (Wii)
by loulou22 Wii Sports Resort. Nintendo Wii Wii Sports Resort was released as a follow up game to the original Wii Sports game which originally came bundled with the Nintendo Wii when you purchased the console. Wii Sports Resort has been released as both a separate game and also as part of the Wii console bundles. I bought my copy ... of this game separately from the Wii as I already had my console. The game came packaged in a cardboard box which contained the Sports Resort game and a motion plus adapter. Contained inside the game case is a game disc along with an instruction manual for the game and also a separate manual containing safety instructions. The game instruction manual is written in English and is clear and simple to follow. Moving with the Motion The motion plus adapter I have just mentioned is a small plastic block which fits onto the end of your normal Wii remote. I reviewed the motion plus adapter a good while back so I wont go into too much detail, but basically this little block helps the Wii remote to detect your movement more accurately and therefore give a better and more realistic gaming experience. Some games require a motion plus to be able to play while others just have motion plus features. Wii Sports Resort is one of those which require it and therefore each Wii remote you wish to play with must have the adapter or be one of the new Wii remotes which has the motion plus sensor built in. Welcome to Wuhu Island Wii Sports Resort is set on the island of Wuhu, a holiday hotspot where your Mii character can take part in 12 different sports with each sport having numerous variations of the sport to add some extra fun and variety. In my opinion the sports available on Wuhu island are really varied and not your typical "sports" game events. In all honesty I kind of wish the island was a real place as I would certainly be taking a holiday there! I also like the fact that almost all of the sports on Sports Resort are different to the original sports game and use a combination of both the Wii remote and nunchuk controller so I feel as if I received value for money right from the word go! Let's Play! The first time you play Sports Resort you will only have the basic version of each sport to play. The more you play each sport and the better you become then the more you will unlock. I like this method because it gives you something to aim for rather than just having a bulk load of sports to play with no particular challenge other than the event itself. Before you start you game you will need to calibrate the motion plus when then Wii asks you to, this is simply a case of laying the remote face down on a flat surface for a couple of seconds. Sometimes you will need to re-calibrate during play but this has been very rare for me and not really a problem. On the main menu screen you will see your 12 sports, I will go through each sport with a brief description, but as you can imagine 12 separate sports might make the review a bit lengthy so I will try to keep it as contained as possible! Swordplay The first game on offer in Wii Sports Resort is Swordplay. This sport will eventually offer 3 kinds of play, Duel, Speed Slice and Showdown. All 3 options require the same use of the Wii remote with it being used as a sword. As you can imagine this does require space and can get children very over excited! Swordplay is a favourite of my little brother, his favourite version is the showdown as it lasts longer and he has to walk through many opponents and knock them down with his sword to win. The game isn't bloody or gruesome in anyway and all of the characters are wearing protective clothing. My favourite is the Speed Slice as you have to slice various items in the direction shown before your opponent. This is particularly good for multiplayer when you don't want to risk breaking things and throwing Wii remotes around the room! Wakeboarding Next up we have Wakeboarding. When I first bought this game this was definitely high up in my list of favourite sports. In Wakeboarding your Mii character is standing on a board and being pulled along on a tow rope by a speed boat, you need to hold the wii remote in front of you as if you are holding the handles of the tow rope, you then need to angle the remote to move to the left and right of the waves created by the boat, flick the remote in the air to jump on the wave and give it a shake to perform a trick. I really liked this because it was simple, fun and addictive. I often ended the sport with my arms above my head as in my excitement I forgot to lower them after jumping! Unfortunately, regardless of the simplicity and fun this sport got a little too repetitive and boring for me as even with the harder versions it is still basically the same principle and not so exciting. Frisbee The Frisbee sport is split into 2 sections, Frisbee Dog and Frisbee Golf. I have played both and my favourite depends on my mood. In both versions you need to stand sideways to the screen and press B to hold your Frisbee, you must then move as if you are throwing a frisbee and release B at the moment you want to release the frisbee. If you are playing Frisbee Dog then your cute little dog will run and try to catch the frisbee to gain points. If you are playing Frisbee Golf then you will work your way around the golf course trying to reach the green. This sport is fun but it can be frustrating while you are learning the best way to throw the frisbee so that it actually flies! Archery Ok, so this is my favourite sport on the game. In archery you need to use both the wii remote and nunchuk controller as if they are your bow and arrow. Depending on which difficulty you are playing you will have static, part hidden or moving target boards which you need to aim for. The boards are set at varying distances and there is a wind speed to watch out for too. I really like this sport as I feel it is more challenging than the rest and like I have to concentrate that little bit more. When I first got the game I had a friend visiting me and she really liked Archery too, so much that after staying up until around 3am playing I heard her get up at 8am on a Sunday morning so she could practice ready for the next challenge! Basketball Basketball isn't a full game of basketball but rather a couple of smaller challenges. The first is a points challenge where you have many basketballs lined up and you need to use the wii remote to aim for the hoop. The second is a 3 on 3 game where you need to try and beat the opposite team with a combination of moving the wii remote and pressing the buttons. I personally favour the points challenge however my brother prefers the 3 on 3 game, I'm not really sure why he does but personally I cannot get used to the controls of the 3 on 3 game. The controls of the points challenge are easy enough as you simply have to flick the wii remote towards the hoop, the hard and frustrating part is throwing the ball straight so that it goes in! Table Tennis In the original Wii Sports we had a really good game of Tennis, in Wii Sports resort we have Table Tennis. Just like in the original tennis you need to use the wii remote as if it were a tennis racket and return the ball over the net. This sport isn't that exciting really, it is maybe a little faster paced than the original tennis but given the choice I would probably prefer to have a game of the original. Golf Golf featured on the original Wii Sports and for me it was too slow paced and just wasn't my cup of tea so I was expecting this golf to be pretty much the same. I was actually wrong though as this version of Golf is a big improvement on the first. It is still slow paced but because of the motion plus accuracy there is a bit more of a challenge in hitting the ball properly and for this reason I do actually enjoy the occasional round of golf! The basics idea of golf is that you stand in front of the TV and use your remote as if it were a golf club to make your swings and get your ball in the cup on the green, taking into account the varying wind speeds and the terrain around you as well as the angle you are swinging the wii remote at. You can choose to play 3, 9 or 18 holes and they are made up of a combination of both the classic 9 holes from the original golf and a new 9 holes especially for this game. It takes me around 30 minutes to complete the full 18 holes. Bowling Bowling is another of the sports which originally featured on Wii Sports and it is still the same simple case of pretending your wii remote is a bowling ball and rolling it down the bowling alley. The difference between this bowling and the original is the same as with the golf, improved accuracy. The motion plus senor picks up any slight twist of your arm and this is shown in the direction and spin on the ball as it rolls towards the pins. The other improvement on bowling is the scenery as in this version you have other players in the alleys next to you which you didn't have in the first. Power Cruising Power Cruising is basically playing on Jet Ski's! This was the sport which I had seen advertised on the game and I was really looking forward to playing, however in reality I think I have played this sport only a handful of times as I don't like the controls. You need to use the wii remote and nunchuk and hold them as you would hold a bikes handles, you then need to angle them to power your jet ski through the archways before the time runs out. In theory this could be a good sport but in reality it is hard to control the jet ski as the movements I make don't seem to match what the jet ski does, maybe it is just me but I just don't get it! Canoeing Nice and simple sport here. Canoeing is one of those sports you will end up playing during a party or games night, it involves sitting on the floor and using the wii remote as a paddle to sail along the marked course. The wii remote can detect the angle you are holding the remote which makes it hard to cut corners when it comes to whether you need to give it your all... no question about it, you do! Cycling Ok, in the first sports game there was boxing, boxing was the sport which made you work up a bit of a sweat. In sports resort we have cycling... it does the same as boxing with the end result being hot and sweaty, or maybe that is just my enthusiasm? In cycling you need to use the wii remote and nunchuk as if they are your bikes pedals and your arms are your legs, you then need to pedal your way around the various courses with the aim of finishing in 1st place, this is quite a challenge when you always begin the race in 30th position! While pedalling you need to make sure you keep an eye on your energy level as you don't want to wear yourself out as this will cause your Mii to stop and take an energy drink which looses valuable time and race positions. I have found the best way to restore energy is to stop pedalling on the downhill areas and try to stay directly behind the person in front (if there is one) to benefit from the rush of air coming off them. At the same time as pedalling you need to remember to steer your bike which is achieved simply by angling the wii remote and nunchuk which in my experience are usually quite responsive even when pedalling. Air Sports For me air sports is the area I head to when I'm feeling lazy as you really don't have to do much. There are 3 different air sports to choose from, Skydiving, Island Flyover and Dogfight. Skydiving is actually the sport which opens the game the very first time you play. In the sport you will jump out of a plane and then hold your wii remote fairly level with only a few movements to adjust your direction and position as you fall. While falling you can link up with other skydivers and pose for photos in mid-air to gain points. Once you reach a certain height you will need to "form up", this will require you to dive through a series of circles the other Mii's have made and then after posing for a final photo your parachute will automatically open. Despite the simplicity of this sport I do really enjoy it and find it rather relaxing! The Island Flyover is also quite relaxing but at the same time it can get quite boring as you are basically flying a plane over Wuhu Island trying to find as many information points as possible, burst balloons and complete other not-that-exciting challenges. This option is nice if you want to see the Island in full but there isn't much more to do really. The plane is easy to fly and really only requires you to move the wii remote in the direction you wish to fly. The dogfight is almost the same as the Island Flyover except this time there are 2 players on a split screen and they are each carrying a trail of balloons behind them which the other player must try and shoot to burst. I have played this option only a few times with the children I used to baby-sit, I think they were about 12 or 13 at the time and overall we all found it really frustrating as the playing area is the whole island and therefore it is quite easy to loose the other player and end up flying around as if you are on the Island Flyover. Pro Points & Stamps All of the sports in Wii Sports Resort offer Pro Points and Stamps. Each time you play you will be awarded points at the end of each game. The amount of points you receive will depend on your performance and a running total will be kept. When you reach 1000 points in any sport you will be regarded as a Pro in that particular sport. Stamps are a little different, there are 5 to collect in each sport and they are won by completing different challenges in the sports. Multiplayer Multiplayer in Sports Resort is fantastic. All of the sports can be played in multiplayer mode with up to four players but you do need to have the motion plus adapter or remotes for each player. For Bowling, Archery, Cycling and Golf you can play multiplayer with one remote shared between the players as these are all games where you take turns. I really enjoy playing bowling with friends and family as it is reasonably calm but yet still very competitive. Archery is also good as a multiplayer and golf is too if you don't mind the amount of time it takes to complete a game. Graphics and Sound The graphics in the game are great, they are very bright colourful and the Mii's are well animated and even wear the appropriate clothes for the sports. The sound is generally ok, the sound effects during the game are realistic and in general I don't find myself reaching for the mute button. Price and Availability Wii Sports Resort can be found on eBay and seems to be selling anywhere from £10 upwards. It also comes bundled with the Wii console in many of the console deals so in this case you would technically get it for free. CEX shop are selling it for £10 if you buy it in a cardboard sleeve, £15 in a normal Wii game box or £20 including the motion plus adapter. Overall Firstly I apologise for the length of this review! I have tried to keep it as short as possible but this really is a very detailed game and therefore so is my review! Hopefully you can tell from the review that I really enjoy playing Wii Sports Resort and I would recommend it, it is fun to play and is a big step forward from the original Wii Sports game. The only downside for me is that you need to have the costly motion plus for each remote you want to use and for this 1 star will be knocked off. The game has an age rating of 7+ which I would say is possibly due to the violence in the sword fighting but it isn't really that bad and certainly nothing to give children nightmares so I would say to just use your personal judgement as a lot of children will enjoy this game. Thanks for reading (especially if you made it to the end!) :) Read the complete review |

Super Paper Mario (Wii)
by TimStain Unlike most sequels which will settle for a nice number 2 in the title (or perhaps more accurately '3' as this is the third game in the series), Nintendo have added the word 'Super'. This seems a bit counter-intuitive to me as highlighting the sequel alone as the 'super' game is a bit like releasing a Half Life sequel called Half Life: ... Good Version. Super Paper Mario's gimmick is that you can 'flip' to an alternate dimension (viewpoint) to see all the secrets and gameplay there (disappointingly, almost none). The 'flip' feature gets old fast and isn't helped by a stupid meter that needlessly punishes you if you stay in the alternate dimension for too long. There's no good reason to punish you for staying in the alternate dimension, it doesn't make the game any more challenging, other than too cynically draw out the length of a game that clearly had a rushed development cycle. Even ignoring the gimmicks, the basic platforming in SPM is uninspired, boring to play and way below the standards of your typical Mario platformer. 'Rushed' is very much the word that sums up Super Paper Mario. Here is a good game that clearly needed a few more months of development, but was probably released quickly in the early days of the Wii so people who had just paid £180 for a new console wouldn't start rioting in the streets at the lack of new games. SPM was originally developed for the GameCube and if you think Twilight Princess was hastily ported to the Wii (which it was) then wait till you see this. I counted two uses of the Wiis motion controls. One was pointing at the TV screen to create a circle of light that could find hidden objects. That's not clever use of the Wii, that's a 'How To Use A Torch' simulator. The other was shaking the remote occasionally to unfreeze yourself. Yeah, this is a GameCube game. Everything I like about this game is from the far superior GameCube title Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. All the good art assets and design (the new stuff is ugly and visually uninteresting) the clever design, the witty scripting. Super Paper Mario has its moments but it's a dull platformer sequel to an excellent RPG. If you're desperate for another Paper Mario game then you'll probably get something out of this but this should have been so much better. I don't doubt that give another few months of development time this would have been a fun platformer with a lot more to see and do, up there with the standards of its predecessor. Super Paper Mario (Wii)
by autumnleaf I had never played the previous paper mario game, this was my first foray into the series. What a treat I was in for. The first thing to note about this game, and presumably people already know this, but this is essentially a 2D RPG platform game with some clever 3D elements attached. Throughout the entirety of the game, the ... developers never ceased to wow me with their new and clever ideas, it truly was a treat to play through. From simple 'flipping' of the scene so that it can be viewed in 3D for a limited period, the developers have created an exciting new space to play with and they have really pushed the boundaries for what they can do with this new novel feature. There are also some other nice touches later in the game, where they have taken this simple concept and added further twists which I will not reveal, to keep the user amazed throughout. In between the action, you will find yourself immersed in more of an RPG like game with fetch quests and the like. These sections break up the action nicely but I didn't find it too uncommon to feel a little lost at times in these parts and eager to get back to the action. My biggest complaint, however, are the cutscenes. Whilst you can skip through individual dialogues, you still have to sit and wait through a lot of them, which I found quite tedious, even though I am sure there are many that will find them entertaining and they in no way ruin the game. Overall, I would recommend this product for any serious gamer and perhaps casual gamers who aren't afraid of playing some more traditional style platforming too. Read the complete review |
