Advantages: good game, good price, can play 2 player co-operatively
Disadvantages: its a bit difficult
Just before Christmas me and my fiancé decided that we would sit in over the holidays and enjoy our time off around the house, so we thought it might be a good idea to buy a new game that we could play together, and both being big fans of the Donkey Kong games (especially the Snes game), we decided to buy Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Nintendo Wii. This game was released last Christmas (2010) however we only got around to buying and playing it now.
What first attracted us to this game was the fact that you can play as Donkey Kong and his son Diddy Kong at the same time on the same screen co-operatively, this means that you don't have to wait your turn to play which can get boring when you are playing after a while.
Donkey Kong Island has been visited to an colourful and quite comical group of evil Tiki's that are taking over animals by hypnotising them on the island and stealing Donkey Kongs precious bananas, so of course it doesn't take long before Donkey Kong along with Diddy Kong start to make their way through Donkey Kong Island from a lovely beach to a dangerous volcano to beat up the Tikis and get their Island and their bananas back.
The storyline in this game has been done before, it's really all about the bananas with Donkey Kong, however it is pleasing for fans like myself and I am glad the game creators didn't stray too far off the Donkey Kong theme when making this game.
Donkey Kong Island is divided up into 8 different worlds, these include, the beach, caves, ruins, a cliff, a factory and a volcano, just to name a few, there is also an extra secret island called The Golden Temple to be played extra on this game which gives the Kongs a second mission of collecting orbs in order to finally get their hands on their precious bananas. I think that this game was quite well laid out and the map that navigates through the Island is easy to move through when you are playing through the game. Navagation on this game is quite similar to other Nintendo games including the Super Mario Bros game in the sense that you move through levels and worlds and bosses until you reach the final boss. The Donkey Kong Island map on this game is drawn out quite well and is also quite pleasing to look at which is always good when you are playing a game.
When playing this game and making your way through the map you will come across Cranky Kong's shop, in this shop you can spend gold coins that are collected in levels throughout the game on different items such as a key to unlock levels on the map, extra lifes, or a parrot to help you find puzzle pieces in levels.
The levels in this game are quite difficult, especially when you are playing co-operatively as it can be hard to co-ordinate with the other player and usually you have only a short time to react to different enemies, puzzles and obstacles within the levels, I think however that this is a good thing as it adds to the games playability and makes it less boring to play.
Within each level, you must collect both KONG letters and also puzzles pieces that are hidden throughout the level, some are more easily found than others and some are easily found, but hard to reach and obtain. The puzzle pieces and KONG letters give this game more playability and add an extra challenge to the game, as it is not only about getting through the level, but completing it 100% and finding everything throughout it.
One big advantage of this game for me is that the Cart Levels (from previous Donkey Kong Games) have made a return, these were always my favourite part of the Donkey Kong Snes game and it was nice to see that these levels weren't forgotten about in the new game.
Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong handle a little bit differently in this game, Donkey Kong can carry Diddy Kong and Diddy Kong can fly for a short period of time with the use of a jetpack and shoot bananas at enemies, you can play either one player where you control Donkey Kong and can make use of Diddy Kong and his Jetpack power or you can play two player, in which case player one is Donkey Kong and player two is Diddy Kong and you must make your way through the levels working together as a team to beat the baddies and solve the levels puzzles and challenges.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics on this game are what you would expect from the Nintendo Wii, they are bright colourful and cartoon styled and very similar to graphics from past Donkey Kong games, I think that this is what attracts Nintendo fans as games are light hearted and fun to play/look at.
The music on this game is upbeat and is not out of place compared to what you would normally find in a Nintendo game, it adds suspense to the game when it gets trickier and makes it more fun to play.
Price and Availability
I bought Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii in Tescos for £27.98 a few weeks before Christmas, I think that this was quite a good price, especially because we have got so much fun out of this game over the holidays. You can buy this game in most good game stores such as Game, HMV, Gamestop or also online.
This game is rated E for everyone, however it is quite difficult in my opinion to complete, therefore I don't think that it would be suitable for anyone under 8 really to play well, the game is non-offensive however and the first few levels and worlds could be fun for a younger audience, or gifted younger gamers.
All in all I think that this is was a really good buy, I would recommend it to anyone who is familiar and likes the Donkey Kong games and also to anyone who likes platform games (especially a good one for people who like playing games co-operatively). The game is a little challenging, especially when you get towards the end and there are lots to do in the sense of finding all the puzzle pieces and KONG letters to complete the game 100%, but who doesn't like a challenge, the game would be a bit boring if it was too easy to complete. Overall I would give this game 4 out of 5 stars.
