I bought this game following the release and watching of the film at the cinema. I have also subsequently read the book, and I feel that the game does closely follow the storyline, although rather vaguely. As you would suspect, the storyline is condensed in the game play, and you don't receive such a detailed account of the story, but it does follow the main plot. It can be difficult to get a sense of what the game is actually about without this depth in the story telling, but if you have either read the book or watched the film you shouldn't have any problems.
This game is interactive and makes the most of the nintendo Wii's ability to do physical movements to impact on the characters abilities.
Primarily you play the role of Lyra and her journey, but at times you also play as Pan- Lyra's daemon companion and Iorek the bear. Each character has a different interactive style to mimic their character's identity. As such, with Lyra you solve puzzels, explore your surrounding, jump, balance on beams, throw objects, read the golden compass and have the ability to deceive others to gain rewards and outwitt dangerous or opposing characters.
When playing as Pan you can change between four different animal forms which have an individual special power. These include an ermine which can see special objects and can also chew through ropes. A sloth with the ability to swing from objects/platforms and help Lyra get to inaccessible places. A hawk able to glide, this is helpful getting across gaps and dangerous places. And finally a wildcat which can quickly dash and roll helping Lyra evade enemies, and climb to places where Lyra would not be able to get on her own.
With Iorek, the bear tou can fight and block enemies with a number of different combo moves and interactive actions.
A family friendly and interactive game.
I personally found the graphics not to be great, but then overall the wii isn't great for graphic quality anyway, as maybe other game consoles are, and relies more on being an interactive experience. You can play out some of the scenes you would have seen in the film interactively, collect special objects and play mini games.
1 player game using both the remote and nunchuk.
I really enjoyed this game I actually played the game before I had watched the film, and it made me go out and rent the film. I found the game very addictive and once I had started playing on it I couldn't put it down. The graphics on the game are brilliant and it makes the most of the Wii controller as you have to do fighting task where you have to wave the controller as if you were fighting yourself, I think that this helps you get more involved in the game. The story line to the game is brilliant and would suit all ages, all the way through the game you get to see clips from the film so that helps you understand the storyline. A good thing about the game is it's separates into different stages so when you got onto the next level that's always a good place to stop. Another thing I liked about the game was how you changed characters for different levels i.e. sometimes you were playing as the polar bear and other times Lyra so you don't get bored of the characters. I would definately recommend you play this game.
I borrowed this game off my cousin as although it was on special when i brought my Wii it was not a game that jumped off the shelf at me.
This games is based on the new blockbuster film from the studio behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Its a world where witches fly through frozen skies, giant armoured bears fight to defend their kingdom and where sinister Gobblers kidnap children and carry them to a frozen wasteland.
Lyra Belacqua travels around in this mysteroius world, where her uncle, Lord Asriel, has been imprisoned, her best friend Roger kidnapped and now she must leave the safety of Jordan College to rescue them both.
Through out the game you see clips of the film, so if you have not seen it you still have a clue about what is going on.
The controls on this game are easy to use and the price of the games is an absolute bargain. This is not the most complicated game but it is great fun. Its an ideal game for the children.
The only disadvantage to this games is that it only saves after every level which can be a bit annoying as you end up repeating yourself which get boring after a while.
