Advantages: good family play, longevity

Disadvantages: none for us really

My son loves the lego games for the wii and as such when the pirates of the Caribbean game were released he wanted to buy it. We traded in a couple of games which we no longer played on and purchased it and I have to say I was initially filled with dread as I am quite rubbish at these games as a rule!

The game is loaded in the same was as any other wii game in that you out it in the wii and then wait for the game logo to appear on the main screen before clicking on it to enter the game. You will need a nunchuck as well as the wii remote for each player who plays the game as the nunchuck controls the character on the screen.

When you start the game you are taken to the port where there are random characters walking around for purchase as well as four boards. Each board represents one of the pirates of the Caribbean movies. You need to start at the first board but the once levels are completed you can revisit them in any order if you wish to play free play.

What I particularly like about all of the lego games we have is that there are snippets of film in which the lego characters recreate key moments from the film or series it represents and this is the same with this game too. Levels start and end with a snippet too and my son and I enjoy taking the time to watch these though it would be nice to skip them once we have seen them once!

As you work your way through levels your aim is to collect as many lego studs as possible as well as finding hidden extras all of which contribute to your true pirate status. My son is always elated to get 100% true pirate status as you are rewarded with an extra gold brick. Lego studs can also be used to purchase extra characters which can be used in free play. My son saved up literally hundreds of thousands of studs to purchase Black Beard!

A thing which really amuses me with this game is that when you are playing as Captain Jack Sparrow the lego character has a funny little run much like Johnny Depp in the films! Other key characters are also replicated in lego and come up in the film to either play as or to battle against.

With other lego games I have found that, for me at least, it can be a bit tricky to know where to go. With this game though you can have it so it will give you a trail of where to go if required but you can also switch this function off if you would rather not be guided. My son and I have found this feature very helpful at times. I do think that children seem to be naturally better at video games these days but my son took to this game well and always seemed to know which character or tool to use where I would still be thinking about it! I do find that the controls can be a bit confusing for me as I always get mixed up with which button to press to change character and such like but this is not an issue my son had so I think that is a bit more to do with me being rubbish!

The game play in this game is good in that it is quite varied and so you are sometimes playing in a city whilst other times you may be at sea or on an island which I think helps keep the player interested. At the end of each level there is a "boss" to defeat too some of which seem to be easier than others. I think that the graphics and music used in the game are great personally and represent the key points of the pirates of the Caribbean movies well.

You can pick up this game for just £14.99 from amazon which I think is an excellent price for the amount of play a family could get from the game. Although my son and I have completed all of the levels there is so much more that we could do if we revisited the game in terms of extras and finding gold bricks and hidden characters and such like and so there is literally months of play within this game. I really do think this is a fun family game to perhaps play at the weekends and as such I recommend it!

Thank you for reading my review!

Summary: A good game!
