Advantages: Great to play on your own or with friends
Disadvantages: None I can think of.
Anyone who has played a Mario Kart game on any previous Nintendo console will be familiar with the way the game works, but for those who haven't here is a brief summary.
Mario Kart is a car racing game, which can either be played as a single player or multiplayer with other people. In the game you drive round different tracks in a cartoon style car (no Porsche or Ferrari cars in this game), trying to beat your opponents. Along the way you can pick up boxes which contain extras: speed boosts, shells to fire at the other drivers, bombs, bananas for your opponents to slip on, and lots more.
Mario Kart Wii has a whopping 32 different courses to try, 16 that are available straight away, the other 16 you have to 'unlock' by completing the other courses. The courses are a mixture of classic courses that have featured in previous Mario Kart games, and 16 brand new courses including one in an underground mine and another on a snowy snowboarding resort. As usual you can play the courses at three different speeds, 50cc, 100cc and 150cc. There are also different single player modes - battle mode, time trial mode and grand prix mode. When you start playing you set up a profile which allows you to save progress, best times etc. Upto 4 people can set up an individual profile.
There are two main ways of driving in Mario Kart. The main way is by using the Wii Wheel which is a plastic wheel that your Wii remote plugs into. You then play with the wheel in mid air (no cables), turning it just like you would a steering wheel in a car. One Wii Wheel comes included with the game, more can be purchased for around £5-£10. The other main control type is by plugging a nunchuck into your wii remote - this is like the N64 Mario Kart controls.
The best thing about Mario Kart Wii in my opinion is the multiplayer function. You can play in three main ways:
1. Up to four people can play locally on one Wii machine
2. You can play over the internet with friends who also have Mario Kart Wii.
3. You can play with random people from all over the world
The online play feature is an absolute delight, it's a real joy trying to beat complete strangers who are playing in Germany, Japan, USA and just about anywhere else!
There's loads of other features, too many to mention in one review. In short, it's a great game for the Wii. It has infinite re-playability, is fun to play on your own and even more fun playing multiplayer. If you've played previous Mario Kart games you're likely to find this one the best yet, and if you have never played Mario Kart before, I urge you to try it. It's easy to play, but offers plenty of challenges for even the most seasoned player.
Summary: A great car racing game, great fun.
