Mario Kart Wii, created by Nintendo.
It is a racing game for the Wii, combining all of your favorite Classic Nintendo Characters. You get to race in a number of different courses, some from other consoles, and some appear to be new, all are named after the characters.
Try and race 4 courses one after the other, in a Grand Prix and try to bag the top spot overall, and win trophies for 1st 2nd and 3rd! The game allows you to play alone, or multiplater, up to 4 players with the classic split screen. At this point you may be thinking "oh no! how annoying" but these days, with larger TVs and with each player screen still being perfectly clear, it really wasn't an annoyance for me when i played with my family. I was too busy trying to defeat everyone. Also, the split screen allows you to check up on how your competitors are doing.
PLAYING THE GAME
You have a choice of vehicles to go with each character. As always each character has differing strengths and weaknesses. Some are speedy, but are hard to handle, whereas others may slow, but are heavy, so can bash others off the course if needs be.
In addition to this, there is also the option to play as you own Mii character. On the starting position, you are with other racers ( the computer, you can set them as easy or hard as you want to beat). You can get a head start, by pushing the accelerator button in a certain way, but fail and you release a ploom of smoke and be left behind.
As you race around the course you see the others racing by as well as there being cubes dotted around the track. You drive through these cubes, and they will give you certain actions, like "spiney shell" which will go for the lead vehicle in the race and take them out, and Bullet bill, which will blast you through the track and over take other racers and imprive your position. The Item you get depends on how well you are doing in the race. At the front you are likely to get Bananas to drop behind you, and at the back you will get mushrooms which speed you up and Bullet Bill.
There are quite a few items you can pick up, which i wont list here, but they help the user gain an advantage, but BEWARE! You aren't immune to them either. If another character uses one you will feel the effects.
GRAPHICS AND THE WHEEL
The wheel attached around the Wii remote really helps game play, but you can have just as much fun without it. Graphics are clear and the game is really responsive to the movements of the remote, even without Wii Motion Plus.
Another feature I didn't know about was that if you own the game Super Mario Galaxy, when you pla Mario Kart you have the opportunity to gain new bonus characters from the Galaxy story line. As you play more of Super Mario Galaxy, you can add more characters onto the list that you can race with. A nice little touch by Nintendo i feel.
Some Wii games are only good with lots of company, are quite boring when played alone, and have little substance as a game which can be enjoyed for a long time. However, this game is brilliant both alone and on muliplayer mode. There are over 30 courses to race on, so the chances of going into a trance on auto pilot because you raced the track so many times before are slim. There are new surprises and additional touches around every corner of the race track, with such detail to them.
I would highly reccomend this game to every Wii owner out there. You shouldn't have a Wii without owning this game too.
It gains a well deserved 5 stars from me.
Summary: Brilliant game, highly addictive, competetive but enjoyable. Versatile stand alone game.
