Advantages: All the mario characters included, reasonable graphics, great gameplay and multiplayer mode
Disadvantages: Huge market for it to compete in
As many people who own Wiis should well know, there are many great and fun party games for the Wii out there. Many of these take full advantage of the Wii's remote and nunchuk, they are great to play in a multiplayer mode as well. So why should Nintendo go to the bother of adding to the large collection of party games for the Wii?
I have owned a Wii for a year, and this game for a month. It combines many character from the Mario games with some fun and interesting gameplay. It won't run out quickly either, like many party games do in single player mode. The killer feature for it has to be the characters it include, like Mario and Luigi, who were practically designed for games like this.
The way the general game part of the game works is in a board game. Players compete to run around the board collecting stars, and at the end of each turn, they all play in a mini game to fight over coins (coins can be traded for stars at certain points of the game). There is also a small separate section in which players can compete in any mini game they have participated in. It has all been put together very well by Nintendo and is extremely enjoyable.
It is of course hard to describe the controls. The reason for this is that there are many different mini games, and each individual one uses an entirely different set of controls. Some games require vigorous shaking of the Wii remote, while others need the remote turned on its side to mimic a normal console controller. This is all very enjoyable.
The graphics are around the average level for a Wii game. They look fine and I cannot really fault them, with the kind of game being played it is hard for them to do much more. They do not really matter in this kind of game, it is about gameplay not graphics.
Single player modes are alright, there are many challenges and mini games that need to be completed. But multiplayer mode is where it really excels, up to 4 people can play at any one time, and they only need remotes not nunchuks. The multiplayer mode is really fun, especially when players have to face off against each other in a mini game competition.
All in all Mario Party 8 is a fantastic game. It combines hours of fun with great gameplay and reasonable graphics, on top of all that is a brilliant multiplayer mode and many Mario characters to choose from. This is definitely a classic in the making.
Summary: A classic already
