Mario Sports Mix (Wii)
Advantages: one of the better sports game, good story to break up gameplay and keep you interested
Disadvantages: none for me!
I grew up playing games on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), most of my favourite games when I was younger included my favourite plumbers Mario and Luigi and their dinosaur friend Yoshi, and of course Princess Peach, who always seems to be running into bad luck and getting captured by the villain in this game King Bowser. I honestly spent hours trying to rescue the Princess in games such as Super Mario Bros 1, 2 and 3, Super Mario World 1 and 2, The Lost Levels and of course Mario 64 when Mario became for 'advanced' on the Nintendo 64 console. The Mario Franchise has brought gamers worldwide countless hours of entertainment, and their games were one of my favourite past times when I was a child.
Mario Sports Mix is a Mario Spin off game where characters from the Mario franchise have been added to a sports game to make it more interesting and get it to appeal to a wider audience.
There is a range of different sports games that you can play as Mario and Co. including Volleyball, ice hockey, field hockey, dodge ball and basketball. You can play theses as a single player against the computer or multiplayer up to 4 players.
The playable characters on this game include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Bowser, Bowser jr., Wario, Waluigi, Daisy and Toad. As you can see there is a good range of characters from the Mario Franchise, so everyone can pick a favourite. Each player has their own skill levels and special abilities so each character you play the game with will bring a different game experience, this makes the game more interesting and gives it more longevity.
There is also a story mode on this game, here is a brief explanation of the plot:
In the Mushroom Kingdom, (home of Princess Peach and her subjects), an object crashes into the backyard of the castle, Toad discovers this while he is doing the gardening and finds out that it contains different crystals that have different sports balls in them. Toad then shows the new sports to the Mario crew and the mushroom kingdom by setting up different sports tournaments, when you win the tournaments more tournaments are then released. Eventually when all the trophies are won from each tournament, they all join together to make a dark crystal that contains a world where King of 'Betiemoth' is found, he must be defeated to restore life to its normal happiness for the Mushroom Kingdom.
I really enjoyed the story on this game and think it was nice to see a storyline on a sports game, it made it more interesting.
The sports on this game are really fun to play, I really like the basketball and volleyball. I think that sports fans would really enjoy this game. The game gets harder as it progresses and the computers can be really hard to beat when they are playing at the hardest mode. I think that this game is definitely much better than other Wii Sports type games.
This game is fantastic for multiplayer, you can play with 1-4 players at a time, every player can play against each other to come first in events. You will need up to 4 Wii Remotes a to get the full play out of this game.
The interface on this game is really easy to understand and it does not take long to navigate through to where you want to go in the game from the title screen.
The graphics on this game are what you would expect from the Nintendo Wii, they are bright colourful and cartoon styled, they could be described as quite child-like compared to games available on the Xbox or Playstation, but I think that this is what attracts Nintendo fans as games are light hearted and fun to play/look at.
The music on this game is motivating and gets you pumped up to participate in the races. It is upbeat and has a fast tempo and is not out of place compared to what you would normally find in a Nintendo game.
I bought this game in HMV for £35, this is quite expensive for a Wii game as in general Mario games are normally more expensive. You can also buy this game in Game, GameStop, Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys or online, I am sure that these stores also stock the game in around this price or even maybe a bit cheaper.
Overall I think that this is one of the better sports games for the Wii, it is a really enjoyable and addictive game. I really like that the game isn't too easy to master and that there is a story throughout. I think this game would be suitable for both kids and big adult kids and it is well worth a play if you enjoy sports or games like Mario Kart as they are quite similar to play.
