Mortal Kombat is back...and as good as ever. (Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (Wii))

Advantages: Good graphics and lots of characters. Disadvantages: Need to buy the gamepad attachment for a really good game. After playing most of the Mortal Kombat series on the PC, playing the 'Armageddon' game on the Wii is really a step up in some aspects. This particular version of the game has plenty of characters to choose from (and plenty of lucrative costumes to choose from) who all have their different strengths and weaknesses. In addition to this there are various modes available such as the training mode to help to get accustomed to using the Wii remote, the 'Head to Head' mode where you can play against another player. Alternatively you can play against the computer, trying to beat other Mortal Kombat opponents who obviously get better as you progress up the totem pole. The main issue I found with this game is that the traditional Wii Remote is not the best of this type of arcade play - there aren't that many combinations of kicks, punches etc. available and for the ones which are...the remote is quite slow. We had to buy the gamepad attachment (which has the X and Z buttons you normally find on PS3s) rather than just using the nunchuck and this sorted that problem out nicely. The final mode available is the racing mode where you can race against human players and the computer on various tracks and try to avoid the gruesome deaths that occur if you veer off course. All in the all, the graphics are pretty good (although a bit gory - they've ditched the unrealistic green blood for the traditional red now) and the characters are good, so if you can already stomach the Mortal Kombat games then this would be a good option. Summary: One of the better games around for the Wii. |
