Advantages: multi-player, new bits & extra games
Disadvantages: multi-player & price
I still remember staying up late at night with the television on mute playing Super Mario. No wonder I wasn't always the best student at school the following days. One of the first games we got with our Wii was the Mario Kart racing game. It was great family fun. My son saw that I had a Super Mario game for the Nintendo DS (handheld gaming) and he enjoyed it so when the new Super Mario Bros game came out for the Wii we wanted it. At first the price held me back ... ... ...well quite a while later and it's still expensive! Thankfully I had some Argos vouchers which made it free. Without the vouchers it would have set me back £27.99.
I had a proper go with the game the next day and it was Mario as I remember it. A few interesting new things to collect, missions to go on, lands to explore and baddies to defeat. It was fun trying out the new power-ups. You can now throw ice balls (just like the fire balls but with an obvious change) and fly like inspector gadget (hat with a propeller on it). I haven't gotten there yet but you can also be Penguin Mario which sounds like it could be fun. Two other around to grab are the Propeller block which is a propeller you must hold to be able to fly with and the glow block which is basically a square flashlight you carry around with you for those dark lands. I had a good time going through the boards and discovering what the game had to offer.
My other half and I played and had a good time ... the problem came when my son wanted to join in. Now remember one of the reasons for buying this in the first place was because it was multi-player. The first land went ok. My son was a bit slow and held us back a bit. After that things began to drive me crazy. My son would randomly put his player into a bubble because he thought it was funny, he'd forget that he can't walk through the other players and thus would knock one of us of a cliff edge or into oncoming baddies, he'd run ahead leaving us behind thus leaving us to die! Lord help the future of the military if he ever enlists!
We managed to make it through a night of playing without any major rows about who killed who and all that. Game night number two was very different. Stop talking, no bubbles, you killed me, stop throwing baddies at me, why would you do that, did you just fart!?! Ok so the last one has nothing to do with the game but it shows you what I have to put up with. Another thing to note is that if your character is in mid jump when another player dies the game does a momentary pause. less than a second but just enough to mess up your jump and send your character to its death. I had really high hopes for the multi-player on this game and it is quite good really ... just better if all players are on the same skill level. Mine of course being way superior to the rest of my household.
If you can't figure out how to get certain coins it's because you need more players so that one can jump to their death and grab it on the way down and then you bring them back to life afterwards ...
We played battle for coins before school this morning which was good fun. No serious skill required and it causes no arguments.
No attachments to the Wii remote are required. Just turn the remote on its side and away you go. I think you can buy normal style gaming remotes to use but I found the normal remote perfectly ok and easy to use. Little man is only 7 and he cottoned on quickly so I'd recommend this for ages 5+. The box says it's suitable for 3 years plus but I've found tons of games that say that and are too advanced for young kiddies.
If you play a lot of games you'll know what I mean ... the map view for Super Mario reminds me of the maps you would sometimes get in the game Worms. Random bit of information there for you all.
My only warning is to ensure your patience levels are good before playing with children.
