Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Advantages: Great graphics, intense plot line (for a child and big Mario fans!), LOTS of variety.
Disadvantages: Once the main part is over there are quite a few boring levels left to complete.
Who doesn't love Super Mario? I have for as long as I've known of him and this game is one of my favourites out of every mario game I've tried.
Not that I actually have tried that many. I'm going to write this review not from a gamer's point of view because I don't have lots of history with past Mario games. This is the first 3D Mario game I played and the first one I played on the wii.
The graphics are stunning and game play is very smooth. The cute characters (especially the Lumas!) are portrayed very well. There aren't any extremely long (or boring) introduction scenes and the game is introduced quite well. This would make it much simpler for little ones.
To play this game you need to use a nunchuck which is already provided with a wii when you first buy it. Unlike other wii games this one requires you to sit down and use the controls like a normal console. So don't expect much physical activity from this game. The most you will get is when you have to shake the remote to get Mario to spin and to point at the screen and collect star bits.
The plot is obviously the typical line of Princess Peach being kidnapped by Bowser. However this time its far more serious and there is much more of a hype between the characters. This time Bowser has planned to take over the entire universe and its of course up to Mario to stop him and rescue the princess. In the introduction Mario gets lost in space after trying to fight Bowser and finds himself on an observatory which has lost all of its power. It is run by a mysterious woman named Rosalina who agrees to help Mario if he helps her to bring back the power the observatory needs to live, or else everything on it (including the sugary cute Lumas) will die. As well as the main plot we are introduced to these new characters and find out more about the elusive Rosalina as a side plot to the game.
Once you are introduced to the game the main levels are set into 6 different themed domes (which are named after places in a house). You unlock the domes by completing the levels within them (or maybe an extra one which I will explain later). To complete a level you must find the 'power star' and bring it back to the observatory as this is the source of power it needs to work and eventually fly. You do not need to do all of the levels in order to unlock more and sometimes there are oppurtunities to get stars out of the Domes, the biggest one being a hungry Luma who will pop up outside a dome. If you feed it enough starbits (another precious supply you need to collect on this game) it will transform into another galaxy for you to find star power, brilliant!
In levels, instead of a flat platform you usually jump from planet to planet, and each galaxy discovered shows us completely new worlds. The amount of variety in this game is brilliant! Mario even has a number of different forms he can take in order to beat the level, but be warned, some are easier than others!
Overall this game is lots of fun, easy to play and very exciting. The only drawback is that once you complete the 60 stars needed to defeat Bowser you need to finish off the other levels, including brand new purple comet levels, to get a 'special surprise' , these comet levels are just tedious coin collecting and put me off the game a little!
Summary: A great addition to a light-hearted gamer's collection!
