Super Paper Mario (Wii)
Advantages: Its great
Disadvantages: gets in the way of playing zelda
To begin with, growing up i was never a mario person, or even a nintendo person; my brother always had nintendo's and i always had sega, and we crossed paths on PS2... That was until the SNES Super Mario game.
I thought that version of the game was astounding, with the addition of Yoshi, who was a great character, and if memory serves, the flying cape et al made for a great game... It was also for me, the beginning of the type of large games we see today, whereas before, most games were easily completed in a short space of time.
We happened upon paper mario by chance, not intending to buy it (i was waiting for Zelda - which i now have also, awesome game).
The start of the game i have to say is one of the most annoying sequences i have EVER seen in any game.... There are speech bubbles, as the story of the game is laid out for you, and to clear each speech bubble you have to press A... The problem with this is that despite not having a 'skip' function, even if you repeatedly tap A until its done, it still takes at least 10 minutes...
By the time the game was starting i wasnt excited, which im sure must have been the intention, but just annoyed and quite ready to switch off...
But then the game starts, and it is glorious indeed!!!
So count bleck, a new character, captures pretty much everyone (including bowser) except mario of course, and heads off to his land... Meanwhile Mario ends up in a strange place called 'flipside', which serves as a kind of HQ for the game.
Mario has to of course save everyone, and the universe, which is slowly being eclipsed by and ever-growing black hole which is omni-present.
Escorted by a 'Pixl' , whose name escapes me just now, Mario has to complete each world to find a PURE HEART; The pure heart has to be brought back to Flipside, and put into the HEART PILLAR in order to unlock the door to the next world... pretty simple right?
Wrong - with some of the puzzles being pretty damn tricky, and the levels fairly complex (for a mario game), the game is no walkthrough.
We all know the cast by now, so i'll stick to the new ones.
* Count Bleck - Since i got Zelda, i stopped playing this game, and so am on the final level.. as such i dont know much about bleck, except that he's a pretty weird dude.
*Merlon - Wizard who is like Mario's counsellor throughout. Isnt much in the game, only in between levels.
*Pixls - These are different characters which you unlock at certain places in the game. When you find them, each one grants you the ability to perform a different task eg. Throwing.
Its also important to note that in this game, Bowser becomes part of Mario's party...
As a normal game, this would be pretty good, but with the addition of being able to 'flip' into 3d mode, oh sorry did i forget to tell you that? Mario can flip into 3d mode for brief spells, which allows to run past pipes and obstacles he couldnt jump over, and a host of other things such as not being able to see something in 2d, becomes clear in 3d...
So, with the addition of the 3d mode, the game becomes even more exciting..
Quite often in true mario style, you have to unlock or collect something, and then go back to be able to proceed.
I thought this game was just great. 2d mode, 3d mode its a revelation.
Nintendo have had fun with this one, with some pretty cool graphics happening, and with some levels being graphics from older platforms its clear they've enjoyed making it.
The only drawbacks that i could find were
1 - unless he appears in this last level, then the closest thing to Yoshi in this game is a statue of him in one of the levels
2 - finding some of the heart pillars is trickier than some of the levels.
Buy this game, if you can get past the 10 minutes of annoying dialog, then you will love it.
Summary: Mario is back, and he rocked my little socks off
