Advantages: Gory and simple Zombie fun

Disadvantages: Very gory, very dark, too short

This game is a hoot but it is relentlessly violent and gory. Defiantly one for the committed zombie film fan.

Overkill is a radical move away from the previous House of the Dead games. Instead of the curious dialogue and the dreadful voice acting it's witty and funny with a very dark sense of humour and a style that draws heavily on classic grind house films and the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez films inspired by grind house.

However it is still a light gun shoot fest on rails against hoards of zombies. There are still power-ups that you have to shoot to activate. You still have civilians to save.

I would recommend that if you are going to buy the game you also buy either the Wii Zapper or a light gun style holder for the Wii remote. It really does improve the experience.

The main game has two modes, Story and Director's Cut. You must complete Story to unlock Director's Cut. There are also the mini games though I personally don't find they add a lot.

The Story mode is relatively easy compared to previous House of the Dead games and it could be completed in a single day, if you don't mind dreaming about Zombies all night afterward. Story mode is great fun with two players but may be slightly easier played solo. It's certainly easier to hit a high score solo.

Director's Cut is a different kettle of fish entirely. It's hard with two players and solo is at least as hard as the previous House of the Dead games.

Everything about this game shows attention to detail. The music, the graphics, the voice acting the level design and the different gun effects are all excellent. The story is a little clunky but I think that's deliberate and references both the previous games and the grind house films.

However it is deeply disgusting and the song, "Taste like Chicken", may be the most disgusting thing I have ever heard or seen outside of a Peter Jackson Zombie movie. Not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach and definitely not for kids.

Summary: Perfect stress relief if you have the stomach for it.
