** What is the Wii Fit? **
The wii fit is a contraption that works in conjunction with the Wii console. It is designed like a set of scales and looks like a chopping board you can stand on. The main aim of the Wii Fit is to act as a body fat monitor, set of scales and a posture and balance board.
To enable the player to grasp all of these features, the disc that comes with the Wii Fit board has a multitude of different activities on which target different areas of the body in a fun way.
** How does it work? **
As I mentioned the wii fit board acts as a posture and balance board that tracks your weight and body fat.
The first time you use the board, you will have to synchronise it to your wii console. This is done very simply by pressing the two red synchronisation buttons on your console and board. Full instructions are provided.
The next step is to wait for the disc to load and follow all the instructions on the screen as you are talked through the process of weighing yourself and setting yourself targets.
** What are the main features? **
The main bit on the wii fit board is to be able to track your weight as you use the machine. The first time you use the board, you will be weighed. One thing to remember form this is that the results may not be 100% accurate. The board will track you in different categories according to weight and height. These are underweight, average, overweight and obese. A slightly overweight person can be tracked as obese.
This is especially important to remember when children are using the board as results such as these could be very damaging to an influential child, so it's important to remind children that the aim for them it to play the games not focus on what the machine tells them.
I am 9 stone 5 ounces and I am 5ft 3 inches tall. The board has me at the top end of average bordering on overweight. In reality I know that my weight is fine for my height.
The other main feature of the board is that it tracks your posture and gives you exercises to help you improve your posture if it's not central. I struggled with this a lot in the beginning of using this machine and I have found listening to the wii fit has helped me stand straighter over time.
** What games can you play? **
There are different games which are sectioned off into different categories, balance games, aerobic games, and muscle workout and yoga activities.
The games can be reached by following the on screen instructions. The first time you use the wii fit, you will be asked to choose a personal trainer. There is a male and a female version, and they will be with you throughout all the muscle workouts and yoga activities.
The trainers actually help you through the activities by giving you pointers if you're going off the mark, or helping you keep your motivation up.
When you start out on the wii fit challenge, only a select few games are available to you in each category. Extra games will be available after you have completed a certain amount of activities or played the wii fit for a certain amount of time. I liked this process as it encourages you to carry on playing the wii fit to see which activity you would unlock next.
It took me ages to unlock all of them, and it was great when I unlocked a game I really wanted to play.
** Muscle workouts **
These activities are all focusing on different muscles in your body. The trainer lets you know which muscles you will be working through the activities, and also keeps you on track by trying to keep your body in a certain alignment. Te alignment is shown o the screen and you have to stay within the yellow circle or blue line for example. This is good to show if you are doing the exercise correctly.
There are various activities available, some easy and some difficult. It is good to challenge yourself if you want to improve your fitness in this area.
** Balance Games **
These games focus on your balance, and there are games such as walking a tightrope, playing football by heading goals and avoiding prank items.
By moving your body reacting to what is on the screen in front of you will help you improve your balance and posture. These games are fun and they are also fun to be able to compete against other members of the family.
All scores are placed on a leader board for each game and you can see your scores against other players which helps healthy competition in the family to try and be that number one spot.
My favourite game in this category is the ski jump. This game has been heavily advertised on TV and basically you crouch and stand to imitate a ski jump. It's important to remember not to jump on the wii fit board as you will damage the components. This seems to be a popular activity between most people I talk to who have the wii fit board.
** Yoga **
There are simple Yoga activities to master in this section and it ranges from simple breathing to standing on one leg looking like a tree.
I found these exercises great for helping me de stress. Yoga isn't something I would have thought about doing before seeing it on the wii fit, and it is great for focusing on your breathing.
Again in this section you are encouraged to stay in the correct spot with the trainer by making sure you stay within the yellow circle or blue bar during the activities.
** Aerobic exercises **
These aerobic exercises will get your heart pumping. There is Hula hooping, jogging, step and boxing to master in this section. It's the only section that will make you sweat slightly, but you can work them as easy or hard as you like.
The jogging is the main activity that you do off the board. By holding the wii more in your hand you can jog on the spot or around your house and the sensor will track your progress against the mii character on the screen.
I found the boxing slightly difficult to master but once you have it's a great exercise to get your heart rate increased.
This is the only exercise that uses the nun chuck as well so do make sure you have one.
** Overall **
I am glad I bought this wii fit board and whilst it doesn't get used as much as it should do, it was well worth the money.
There are a few things to remember if you're thinking of purchasing a wii fit board.
- Takes 2 AA batteries that will run out with constant use.
- If you're worried about your health don't use before consulting a doctor
- If you jump on it it may well break
- Encourage children not to focus on the weight aspect.
- Your weight will and can fluctuate on a daily basis so don't be disheartened when you have put on 2 pounds in a day. It may be the time of day you are using the board or the clothes you are wearing.
There are also a few little extras that you can do with the wii fit board
- The piggy cash bank tracks the time you have used the wii fit. It will advise you to take a break after every 30 minutes, so don't overdo the exercise.
- You can record your progress on the main screen where you can set yourself a weight target or a bmi target.
- Extra activities you do away from the wii fit can be recorded to count towards your exercise total.
The wii fit board will cost £69.99 and I think it is well worth the money of you are into the exercise as well as the family fun element. It was a great idea from Nintendo to get women especially excited about games consoles.
