Wii Fit (Wii)
Advantages: Great fun, exercise without needing to leave the home, and for all the family
Disadvantages: Don't expect to lose weight immediantly
The Wii Fit is the most unique of devices. While people regularly complain that video games turn their kids into couch potatoes, and leave them fixated for hours with their eyes fixed on the screen, the Wii Fit is a videogame that provides exercise. How does that work out? Wii Fit may seem a more costly purchase to your average game, but this is because apart from the CD, it comes with what is known as the Wii Balance Board, which is the key to providing exercise. After you put the CD into your Wii and load it up, you will be greeted by a talking Wii Balance Board on the screen, which will weigh you by standing on your actual Board, and make judgements, which will reveal a lot you didn't know about yourself. I was told my balance and posture was very poor, and I should have difficulty walking without falling over a lot. It also gives you a Wii Fit Age based on weight and current age. My Wii Fit age was 30. Very interesting information. The Wii Balance Board is very pressure sensitive and it works well. Wii Fit is a useful tool for losing weight, on the menu screen is a calendar, and you can choose your ideal weight and put it in the calendar, for example 2 weeks, from the present day, to achieve that goal. It is clearly marked, and it is a helpful tool. Wii Fit also allows its players to take body tests, and they can compare their results without the game disc by installing the game's own "Wii Fit Channel". Then there are the exercises, which are divided into 4 categories. Here you have a choice of Aerobics, designed for burning calories and fat, Muscle workouts for tightening various muscles, Balance games, to help improve your balance and coordination (which I apparently really needed), and Yoga poses. There are around 50 different activities, but some of them you have to unlock by achieving good scores. You are shown how to do the activities on the screen, and for the Muscle and Yoga workouts, you have your own friendly virtual trainer (which you can change if you like), who shows you how to do the exercises, with a step by step tutorial, if you need it. The trainer offers you useful tips while doing the exercises, and you can choose how many repetitions you want to do, so you don't have to overexert yourself, if you don't feel like it. After each activity, you are given a star rating, and score, and this is put onto a rankings table, so you can see how other people who use your Wii Fit, have done, and who is doing the best.
The Wii Fit is a great tool to use, particularly if you can't be bothered making the trek to your local gym, then finding out the pay is too expensive, and all the weights and machines are taken by beefy, mean looking Arnold Schwarzenegger wannabes. Or if you don't want to go outside for a jog (there is jogging on Wii Fit), because its cold, wet, and you're worried about bumping into someone you know. The Wii Fit means you can exercise in the comfort of your own home. It is more cheaper then buying a treadmill, and offers a wider range of activities. However, for those who want to lose weight and quickly, it can take time. Sometimes with the Wii Fit it can feel like you're doing a lot, then you go and weigh yourself, and either nothing or very little has changed. So, make sure that when you choose your weight target, make sure it is achievable. If you're expecting to shed 2 pounds from 10 minutes, then be in for a shock.
Wii Fit is great fun for all the family and it can be fit into busy schedules. It combines exercise with enjoyment aswell. Often exercise can be thought of as a bit of a chore, but here, you will enjoy it also, with the wide range of activities, and the balance games which can get addictive. So, yes, the Wii Fit is a videogame which provides exercise, and it bridges this previously unbelievable gap, very well indeed.
