Advantages: Fun, simple, effective exercises
Disadvantages: Can be a bit slow and too much explanation
After desperately wanting the Wii fit for many months, my OH and I eventually saved the money and decided to go ahead and treat ourselves.
We bought ours from HMV and paid £69.99 at the time - the price has gone down since it was released and may be even cheaper now!
~~First Impressions~~
As we had been waiting so long to get the board and game we were very excited to try it out as soon as we got home. The set up was very simple, the batteries were included and all we then had to do was sync the board with the Wii.
Following the set up, you are prompted to set up a profile for each person who will be using the board. My partner and I both did this and again we found it quick and straight forward.
On your initial visit you then have the option to carry out a body test, it is a very basic test that weighs you and then works out your BMI according to the height you give the machine. You are then also tested on your balance - this can lead to some highly surprising results!! I never saw myself as a 'leaner' but according to the Wii fit my balance is rubbish!!
~~The Exercises~~
Now admittedly this is not a full body work out and it wont turn you into an Olympic athlete, but for people trying to fit simple exercises into everyday life it is great!
There are a range of balance exercises, aerobics, cardiovascular and yoga positions. All the exercises are talked through step by step and start at a beginner stage - gaining good scores on these then in turn lead to new levels being opened.
The cardiovascular ones are definitely my favourite as you almost forget that you are exercising - for example hoola hoop practicing.
Your time spent on the Wii is added up and this also leads to new levels and exercises being available to you - thus encouraging you to exercise more!
~~Overall~~
As an addition to your usual exercise regime this is great - or even for those who are taking up exercise for the first time! I have heard many criticisms of this not being real exercise, but after spending an hour on it doing the various exercises it has certainly left me tired and feeling worked out - and I am a regular gym goer!
The exercises can begin very basic and it can be frustrating the amount of talking and explanation that is given when you just want to get on with it!
It is also great fun for the whole family, I am a big fan of the Wii in general as I think it has something on for all ages, and I think this addition is the same - I've even had my Gran on it!
I do however see this as a base for some of the extra games available. After having this package for a month or two, I felt it was no longer pushing me and I wasn't feeling the full benefits - from this I then decided to buy another add on for it with further cardiovascular exercises (which I will review at a later date!!).
It is defiantly a great started pack and I would recommend it to anyone thinking abut buying it. A great substitute for the days I don't have time to go to the gym!
Summary: Would definatly recommend!!
