Wii Sports is a very popular launch title for the innovative Nintendo Wii. As a launch title it was released along with the Wii in November 2006 and was often bundled with the motion sensing gaming system. The game is a sports game, funnily enough, which was designed by Nintendo not just as a great launch title but also to demonstrate the capabilities of the system. In case you don't know the Wii allows up to four players, on Wii Sports anyway, to use the motion sensor Wii Mote as well as the Nunchuck controller to control characters by physically moving yourself. If you are aware of the Wii, you will know that you can create your Mii, which is a character for yourself. Wii Sports uses these characters to play the game.

Wii Sports has a collection of five different sports for you to play on your own or with friends and family. It is a lot funner playing the game with others by the way. You can try your hand at boxing, take a swing at golf, have a shot at tennis, have a bowl down the alley, or maybe baseball is where you feel at home. All of the games have a basic setup. You choose your Mii character and decide how many of you will play and then you would play the sports to the usual rules. There is the incentive of getting better and beating you and your friends previous best scores but this game is more about the fun at the time rather than an in depth story mode. Once you recieve 1000 points at any of the sports the Mii is awarded pro level and a little cosmetic feature.

The bowling is a good game mode that is also harder than it looks. You bowl using the Wii mote just like you would for a normal bowling action, holding the buttons whilst you do it. If you want the ball to go straight, you must keep your arm and the controller straight or the ball will start to veer off. You can set where your starting position is and add spin to the ball by twisting your controller left or right when you are about to release. I like this game mode but obviously only one player can have their turn at a time.

The boxing is my least favourite game mode and I rarely ever play it. Something about it just doesn't seem right which I find difficult to explain. I think the fact that you can not see your arms and just your gloves makes it seem weird.

As for the baseball, it is something that is quite enjoyable but can get a bit stale and same old after awhile. After all, all you do is just stand still and smack the ball as hard as you can.

The golf is good fun in my opinion. Four players can play a round and it is genuinely pretty difficult. You have got to keep your swing straight and also get the right balance of power making this the game mode that requires the most skill. I have certainly had my fair share of bogey scores but it is nice to play a round.

My favourite sport has got to be the tennis. You play doubles with either two players or four players in multiplayer. When it is one on one it is a bit weird as you are controlling both players on your side so if you miss it with the Mii at the net you find yourself quickly having to swing again so the Mii at the base line hits it. But with four players the game is a good laugh, but make sure you have the controller securely fastened as with four people swinging in one room it can get a bit dangerous!

Wii Sports is an essential game for any Wii owners and demonstrates the potential of the Nintendo Wii very well.

Summary: A fun sports game for the Wii
