Advantages: its free, addictive, interactive
Disadvantages: nothing
After you fork over $250 plus tax on the Wii system, suddenly you're also overwhelmed because now you need games for it and probably an additional Wiimote, especially if you have kids.. which will probably add another $80-90 to your total spending. Fortunately, Nintendo includes Wii Sports absolutely free, right in the Wii box. Its very entertaining, interactive, and definitely will keep you amused for a while - so if you're a parent, rest assured you won't need to immediately run out and get a big expensive game for your kid to enjoy the system.
Wii Sports has 5 sporting events - baseball, tennis, golf, bowling and boxing. Each rely on physical movements of your body with the Wiimote and sometimes with the nunchuk as well to execute moves in each event. I'll go through each sport now.
(Tennis)
You can use your own Mii character in every sport on this game disc. Tennis is extremely fun. Holding the Wiimote as tennis raquet, you can do things like throw the ball up and serve by swinging it as well as knocking the ball back and forth against the CPU or other players. You can either team up with other players, control 2 characters for front and back rows, or set the CPU as your partner. When you control both characters, any moves you make are done by both rows. Learning to control your swing is very important in determining the speed and direction the ball will go.
(Baseball)
Holding the Wiimote as a bat you can swing to hit the ball as it comes at you. Characters in the outfield are all CPU controlled. You only handle hitting or throwing the ball. Running to bases is also done by CPU characters. Your timing and swing determines whether or not the ball will go far, will be foul, or could be a home run. When throwing, you simply flick the Wiimote for a fasball. To do other things like curveballs or splitters, you hold down a specific button on the Wiimote while swining to throw.
(Golf)
Holding the Wiimote as a golf club, you can hit the ball long distances or even put a few inches or feet. With this game, its not necessarily about how intense or fast your swing is, but really takes more precision and control.
(Boxing)
Holding the Wiimote and nunchuck as your boxing gloves, you cans throw jabs, swing punches, shift from left to right to dodge hits, block, and uppercut your opponent.
There's also a training mode for each kind that's supposed to be designed to help you stay in shape as well. It gives you various tasks to do in each sport to help you master the controls while building stamina and improving your coordination.
All the games are extremely addicting and fun for all ages. Its almost impossible not to want to play another game after you complete one. As you play, you earn points to boost your rank which also opens up more difficult CPU opponents in some games to keep the challenge increasing as your skills do. This game is great and free! What more can you ask for?
Summary: Wii Sports comes free with Wii and is an amazing game that shows you what the system can do.
