Wii Sports (Wii)
Advantages: A game for everyone
Disadvantages: Graphics, golf not very accurate
Wii Sports is a game for the Nintendo Wii console which has a few sports games on the one disc. The game often comes with the Wii console or can be bought seperately.
You can play alone or with friends either sharing a controller or using one each with up to 4 players. You can also get special controllers to use for this game, a tennis racquet and golf club shaped holder for your controller are a couple that are available and I have seen this in Poundland, although I don't have them I'm sure for kids these controllers would make the games seem a lot more fun and realistic to them so it would probably be worth picking them up for £1.
You can use your own personal Wii character (a Mii) which saves your high scores etc. onto your console, or if you are playing with people who don't regularly use the console you can start a game without them having their own characters and it is quick and easy to set up.
You have 5 sports to choose from:
In each game you use your controller as your porting equipment, the baseball takes a bit of getting used to as you have to get the timing right. You need to move your controller at just the right time or you will miss the ball.
Bowling is an interesting one as you have to move your controller at the sensor and keep it straight to avoid the ball going into the gutter. Some of my friends always go off to one side but you can use the arrows on your controller to make your 'mii' stand to one side of the alley when bowling which usually sorts it out.
When boxing you will need to plug in a nunchuck controller into your normal controller, giving you a controller in both hands. You can then use these controllers as you wish, alternating between hands to create punching combos or using the controllers to block incoming hits.
I don't find the golf that easy to play, the controller doesn't seem to give a very accurate shot.
The graphics and sounds in most Nintendo Wii games are childish and this one is no different. The picture is very like a cartoon but in this particular game it doesn't stop adults enjoying it as well.
The scoring is done as it would be in the actual sports, so you play matches and sets in tennis, try to get home runs in baseball and try to get below par on golf. This is good as it's also a good way for kids to learn how the scoring works.
There is also a points system which awards you points based on your performance, it will show you how many points you have gained in each sport and will show your points increasing on a graph. As your score goes up, so does your ranking. You start as a rookie and have to play lots and get good scores to improve on your rank.
The game currently retails at around £20 new and £15 used online. I have seen used copies in game shops for under £10 which I think is good value.
I enjoy playing this game, at first it really made my arm ache the day after playing but I started to get used to this and don't find it aches as much now. The boxing will really test your fitness and after a few rounds it gets quite challenging which makes it even more fun as I don't like games that are too easy.
I like the fact that you can play the game alone or with others. It is also one that would be suitable for a wide age range. I know 4 year olds and 60 year olds who play on this so it's a good buy for the whole family.
Summary: A fun and competitive game
