In the past I have been a huge fan of the WWE, decreasingly so as I have gotten older and the product seems to have took a turn for the worse. Back in the day I would await the release of WWE games on the various systems with bated breath and be engrossed in them for months after they came out. Its been a few years since I did actually buy on but seeing WWE 12 on offer for the Wii recently I just could not resist.
This title was released just before Christmas last year and is the most up to date WWE title. Its available on other formats but it is simply the Wii version I am focusing on here.
The graphics are surprisingly good here considering this is the Wii and I do not really have any complaints. Gone are the days when gamers expect much from the Wii visually but THQ have taken some time and effort to make sure this game looks and sounds great and in terms of presentation it is one of the best on the Wii. All the characters look lifelike, they are obviously "cartooned" versions but still it looks very good, the arenas are realistic and vivid and the whole experience feels exactly like you were in a WWE Tv show which is what fans want!
The first few hours with this game you will probably find yourself at war with the controls as they have taken some getting used to. Whether it is because I have never played a WWE game on wii before or not I do not know, but I really struggled getting to grips with this and although I knew what I had to do in each match and set piece doing it was another matter. I really disliked when the controls feel this loose and you end up button bashing etc or having to repeat commands over and over. It takes away a bit of the skill. This does settle after a while though and you will tend to find that the more you play the better you get. All it does mean though is that for new players, i.e. if inviting a friend round from some multiplayer, its hard to pick up and play.
They have added a few bits and bobs to the gameplay apparently such as submission systems. I say apparently as I don't know whats new from the last version as I did not play it. But they make a big deal of the new submission systems which to be fair works much better than previous incarnations I played all those years ago.
All the superstars from the current WWE roster you would expect are on hand with official music etc and your favourite will be there. As I said before everything has been reproduced to a high standard. You will have no complaints here!
Even if you cannot find the superstar for you it is easy to create one......the create a wrestler mode has always been a favourite of players and this year it is so detailed I spent hours making mine. Everything from moves to clothes to entrances is yours and so the wrestler actually feels as you want it to. Brilliant!
All the modes of the games are there that you could want and they all work well from ladder matches, cage matches triple threat etc and the main modes in the game include a very engrossing, long and storyline driven Road to Wrestlemania title that has more storylines more realistic to what you would see on tv as oppose to previous titles I have played.
All in all this is a good authentic WWE title that although it takes time getting used to it will grip you in and you will find yourself hooked by the matches which are sea saw affairs! Try before you buy.
