In the "age of austerity" we are all trying to tighten the purse strings leaving everyone to feel that we are missing out on the finer things in life. This is a brilliant book that reminds us that life is about the little things, and just getting out there and enjoying it.
As it says in the title the book suggests 102 Things to do for free - well mostly free. Each suggestion is on either one or two pages most with lovely silhouette illustrations. It is no preachy nor does it claim to change your life. The book is a compilation of activities full of ideas as to how to appreciate the little things.
There are over 100 suggestions but they all fall into the following categories.
Nature - Walk in the morning dew, Grow huge sunflowers, Gather a meal from the wild.
Thrifty - Make Christmas presents, become a Freegan, join project Gutenberg
Relationships - Write a love letter, Learn How to talk to strangers in public, Work a room.
Mind - Memorise a poem, invent a language, try lucid dreaming
Body - Achieve your ideal weight, Get fit without joining the gym.
Soul - Laugh in the face of death, Come to terms with aging, Let go of emotional pain.
Creative - Write down your grandparents stories, write down everything that has made you laugh diary.
My best friend bought me this book as a birthday gift after I had been complaining I was bored and skint, and it is one of the best gifts ever. It is a book that truly does inspire you to go out and do something. The ideas it suggests are not massive, most of the time you could open the book and do the activity almost immediately such as "Reflecting on Something You Are Truly Grateful For". As a cloud spotting fan (see my review on The Cloud Spotters Guide) I already knew the benefits of appreciating the world around us, this book suggests just such activities such as Walk in the Morning Dew, look at the stars or go outside and sit somewhere that is very silent. If you are feeling a bit down or a bit bored open up at any page and you will find a suggestion that will inspire you to do something.
This is also a great book for ideas of things to do with the kids, especially the creative and nature ideas. I am taking my nephews to the beach to put a message in a bottle.
Now you will have to excuse me as I am off to ask a child for advice and apply to be in a police line up.
