A funny book with creative comic strips that is well worth reading

As a fan of the explosm.net website which features a never ending amount of comics completed by friends Kris, Rob, Matt and Dave I was very pleased when my boyfriend bought me this book for me as a gift.

It features over 150 comic strips, 30 of which are never before seen, as well as 'interactive' sections that poke fun at do it yourself sections of magasines with crosswords, fill-in-the-gaps and even a dot to dot. The book claims that these sections are for "kids and slow adults", however with the content of these sections, verging on the offensive and politically incorrect, the book is perhaps a bit more suited to adults. This section is a joke as you spend all of 10 seconds filling them out, all of them, but its still laugh out loud funny and a little outrageous.

The book features strips on a variety of subjects, like the old faithfuls from the website 'Doctor Baby' and 'Super Jerk' which are funny as always. As well as this, there are a number of never before seen comic strips which continue to prove how funny these four guys are and are gratly enjoyable.

The book is an awkward shape, meaning it doesn't fit into my teeny bookcase and isn't particularly long. But with a few strips to each page, unless that particular episode requires the full page if say, the animation grows outside of the squares, it is well worth the money and full to the brim with laughs.

One product description claims "If you're younger than 15 or older than 50, there is an 87% chance that something in this book will offend you", something i greatly agree with. Not that this book is overly offensive and will offend everyone, but for those of you whom are a little sensitive you may be a little shocked at certain strips. If anything, the fact that the ridiculousness is stemming from cute and simplistic cartoons brushes off much of the offensiveness and makes the book much more witty and dry-witted.

Its difficult to describe this book as obviously it is not a piece of literature, but it is neither a piece of art. One way to describe it is just four friends getting away with as much as they can and being funny in addition.

A lot of people might limit Cyanide and Happiness to being just a stupid, childish book, and they're right. But that's what makes it so great, as you snicker away as you're turning the pages.

A great book containing laugh out loud comic strips

I have read the daily comics that appear on www.explosm.net for a while now, and recently they have decided to take some of their most popular and funniest strips and put them into book form. Their first book was quite popular, and now they've released Ice Cream and Sadness which has some of the strips which were published around a year ago.

The book can be found in Waterstones in the Humour section in most cases and costs around £10, however bought from Amazon it's only around £5 and so much better to purchase from. I'd say before buying the book check out the website, as all of the strips have the same sense of humour as the book and you'll be able to judge whether you'd like it or not.

The comics feature a variety of topics some a little out there or not used in other comics as much, but they are all funny if you match their sense of humour. Aside from the comic strips which are laugh out loud most of the time due to their wittiness or just strangeness in some cases, there is also a section at the back of Puzzles. While these are definitely not for children, they are also pretty funny as they are as crude and odd as the comic strips themselves.

Previous and current readers will like this book as it does give quite a lot of the well known comics and they are nice to flip through when bored to just read. However, it would also make quite a good introduction into the comic strips or just a funny gift for someone if you know they'd have the same sense of humour.

As there are 4 authors to the different comics on the website, all the comics in the book have different styles. I found that they are well drawn, and while they may look simple, I find that they are quite well drawn actually and that they have more detail than people might think.

The quality of the book is very good, as it is a hardcover I've never had any problems with it breaking or getting a cracked spine. The pages are of good quality and made out of quite thick paper which doesnt get dog eared easily and is quite tough so it is well worth the price that you would pay for them.

Overall, I would say that this is a very good book to buy whether your already a fan of the comics or just looking for a funny book to give to someone as a gift. While the humour may not be everyones cup of tea, I'd think that most of the comics would appeal to people and that they would find them laugh out loud. The book is of high quality and I would say well worth the money.
