Everyone should read Betjeman. He writes in a style which is descriptive but not flowery, poetic and yet direct. He writes about the things he loves and the things that annoy him, and he does both equally well. This book is almost his complete works and contains all his best known poems "Myfanwy", "Christmas", "Slough", "Hymn", "The Arrest of Oscar Wilde...." plus many that are less well known. Above all he writes about his beloved England, from Norfolk to Devon via Oxford. If you've never read Betjeman - try him. I think of him a wise old Uncle that I'm comfortable with, but sometimes surprises me. And some of the surprises are in this book - poems that were written many years ago but have amazingly modern themes, such as Road Rage and Organic Farming. I was given this book as a present some time ago so I'm not sure about the price now, but if you can get hold of it, I highly recommend it.
