Advantages: A drama including family struggle, class struggle *and* sexual tension. What more do you want?
Disadvantages: Reading is required, can be heavy at times
Ok, first of all, I have to put my hands up and confess that yes, I have studied this play. And no, I would not have read it otherwise. But before you write me off, bear two things in mind: 1) I really do like this play and I'm very glad I was introduced to it; and 2) I only studied it for GCSE, so it doesn't really count...
The action centres around the Kowalski household in New Orleans, where Stanley, a Polish immigrant, lives with his upper-class wife, Stella. When Stella's sister, Blanche, arrives in town (leaving a seedy past behind her, with references to an incestuous family, alcoholism and prostitution), she immediately provokes conflict. She reminds Stella of all she had left behind and given up; she insults Stanley on the basis of his background; and she flirts with Stanley's friends. The final climax and destruction comes as a result of the explosive chemistry between her and Stanley, which can only have one conclusion... (but don't worry, I won't give it away!).
A Streetcar Named Desire can be read on numerous levels. It can examined as a study of relationships (between family members, between friends, between lovers), or taken as a metaphor for America itself. In class we were encouraged to view it as a portrayal of the struggle between the old and new in American society (with Blanche representing the old and Stanley the new).
Detailed study and analysis of the text is not needed for the normal playgoer to enjoy the play, however. The play is extremely powerful and will usually ellicit a response from every member of the audience. I would recommend viewing a production if you have the chance, but if none are currently playing then rent or buy the classic film (starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh). It was this film that shot Brando to fame and its so good that it's never been remade (high praise by Hollywood standards!). Brando is truly outstanding as Stanley - he captures his real essence - an
d the film is very useful for understanding the play as a student.
Last few words: It's a classic, and there's a reason why. It's that good.
