I am currently a student nurse and have found Ross and Wilson Anatomy and Physiology in health and illness to be invaluable. This is one of many Ross and Wilson books I have used and yet again I am not disappointed. I bought the 11th edition last year and it has come in handy throughout my whole first year of study.
Ross and Wilson cover and talk about all systems within the body and then the common conditions related to each system. I found this a great benefit as many other A and P books that I have used during my studies only offer information on the system and not related conditions, which I have found to be the main basis of most assignments. I have found this book to be rather basic so it is great to get a general overview of a particular topic but if it is in depth information needed this may not be the best book. I have used this book when I have first been giving an assignment to get a general idea of the topic, look at the related conditions and then I can then go and look these up further in more advanced A and P books or specialised literature, I have also used many quotes and references within assignments.
One of the great things about this book is the colourful pages that are full of colour pictures which can help to explain the topic, I find this great as I find writing assignments can be extremely dull when continuously looking at black ink on a plain page. With clear learning outcomes at the start of each new topic it makes revision a lot easier, the Ross and Wilson workbooks then work in conjunction with this text book to test knowledge.
The price of this book is currently around £25 on Amazon and eBay but these prices vary so look round before purchasing , it is also available in most book stores but these are more expensive again so always look online. This may seem expensive but all text books seem to be over thirty pounds at least. Also as it includes numerous topics I feel it is well worth it.
In all I feel this book would certainly benefit student nurses other student health care professionals and also people who are just interested in learning Anatomy and Physiology. It is great for background knowledge and can be used to aid in assignments, easy to read and is understandable however it is not in depth as other textbooks available.
This book is now on it's 11th edition. I ordered it from Amazon for £26.55, although I now believe it may have gone up in price. On arrival, my initial thought was that this text book does not look worth £27.00 - although text books are always generally expensive.
This book, in its most recent edition, is clear and colourful, and offers a straightforward way of learning anatomy and physiology of the human body. The textbook comes with a code which is revealed when you scratch off a panel on the front page (The book cannot be returned once the panel is scratched off). Once you redeem the code, visiting rossandwilson.com will give you access to the book on a computer screen, more diagrams, and tests and quizzes on each section of the book. The tests and quizzes are excellent, and I found them invaluable when recently revising for exams. There is also access to videos online - for example, a video of the urinary system and the nephron, make it simple to understand.
I started my course in midwifery with barely no knowledge of anatomy. The last time I had studied science was four years previously. This was very daunting and I knew I needed a good, clear textbook. Ross and Wilson guides you around the anatomy and physiology of the body in a very easy way. The diagrams are well detailed and easy to understand.
This text book must be good, as I gained 86% in my exam!! Not bad for someone who hasn't studied biology in almost half a decade. I would recommend this book for anyone who is starting a university degree in health care. However, if you are familiar with anatomy and physiology of the body, perhaps a more advanced book may be more appropriate.
There is nothing worse than trawling trough the literature looking for a suitable anatomy and physiology study aid.
Ross and Wilson Review
Who Is It For?
This book is a useful tool for studying the basic anatomy and physiology of the human body. It has been produced with Nurses, Student Nurses and Healthcare Assistants in mind. However would also be suitable for those who have an interest in this subject.
What Is It About?
This 490 page book has been split into several sections and subsections which gives a complete overview of the workings and systems within the human body. The first section is concerned with The Body and its Constituents. The topics include Homeostasis, Negative feedback Mechanisms, Positive feedback mechanisms, Homeostatic imbalance, Communication, Transport systems, Intake of raw materials and elimination of waste, Protection and survival, Resistance and immunity and Reproduction. There is an interesting Introduction to the chemistry of the body featuring Atoms, molecules and compounds, Carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins and lipids nucleotides and enzymes. Furthermore it explains the physiology of the movements of substances within the body. Cells, tissues and organisation of the body. To include the cell structure and function, tissues, organisation of the body the skeleton, cavities of the body. This is accompanied b a useful account of disorders which can affect the cells and tissues. Section 2 looks at the communication capabilities within the body to include The Blood, The cardiovascular system, The lymphatic system, the nervous system, the special senses and the endocrine system. Section 3 explores The respiratory system, an introduction to nutrition, The digestive system and the urinary system. The final section of the book examines The skin, resistance and immunity, The musculoskeletal system, An introduction to genetics and finally The reproductive system.
Within each study chapter there are a serious of learning outcomes which highlights what the reader should know after consulting a particular section of text. There are useful illustrations which facilitate learning and provide further visual reinforcement of what is written in the text. (sometimes it makes it easier to understand something when you see a picture).
The entire book is in full-colour and the illustrations are exceptional facilitating your learning experience. There is a handy guide at the beginning of the book which provides a list of Common prefixes, suffixes and roots which helps to understand some of the concepts used within its pages. It is easy to read however a bit of repetition may be required in order to be able to remember and understand each section. It is written in large text saving the squinting eye syndrome. Provides a sound knowledge base from which to build on. There is also a useful study guide (which has to be purchased separately) which accompanies this book.
Very few in all honesty. If I was to be critical it is quite expensive around £30 but this is probably standard for this type of textbook. Large but there is a lot of information in the pages.
I bought this book during first year of studying a degree in Adult Nursing. The book was recommended by the module leader of anatomy and physiology at the university I am attending. I found the book extremely helpful when trying to cram everything in before my anatomy and physiology exam. I first read the book in the uni library, among other anatomy and physiology books. I found this one suited me best as the information was well explained and broken down into sections which were easy to digest. The text is also accompanied with detailed diagrams which are easy to understand
The book has 19 chapters in total and is further broken down into four sections namely 'The Body and its constituents', 'Communication',' Intake of Raw Materials and the Elimination of Waste', and 'Protection and Survival'.
For the benefit of the reader, the authors have included a page of prefixes, suffixes and roots of terminology commonly used in the book, as well as their meaning and examples of their uses. For example, (taken from the book) the suffix '-itis', is to do with inflammation. Examples used I the book include appendicitis, hepatitis, cystitis and gastritis. This guide alone proved to be very helpful while sitting the A and P exam as well as throughout my nurse training to date, as I have been able to apply terminology heard on the ward, to the book to give me an idea of the meaning. For example, when I hear or see terminology prefixed with card-, nephro- or gast- , I know that the heart, kidney or stomach are being referred to.
Section 1 'The Body and its Constituents' is broken down into 3 chapters, namely 'An Introduction to the Human Body; An Introduction to the Chemistry of Life; and Cells, Tissues and Organization of the Body.
Chapter 1 describes the levels of structural complexity within the body, homeostasis, survival needs of the body, protection and survival, and an introduction to the study of illness.
Chapter 2 introduces the reader to atoms molecules and compounds; important biological compounds such as carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes etc; diffusion, osmosis; and extracellular and intracellular fluid.
Chapter 3 describes the cells, tissues and organisation of the body. It then describes disorders of cells and tissues, for example tumours.
Section 2 contains 6 chapters covering the aspects of blood and blood composition, the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system, the nervous system, the special senses and the endocrine system. Each chapter also includes an explanation of illnesses and disorders which are common in each system.
Section 3 contains 4 chapters which describe the repiratory system, nutrition, the digestive system and the urinary system. It too includes a detailed description of common illnesses and disorders associated with each system.
Section 4 refers to protection and survival. It contains 6 chapters which desribes the features and importance of the skin, immunity and resistance, the skeleton, the joints, the muscular system and the reproductive systems. It also covers common disorders in each area.
I found the diagrams in the book extremely relevant and greatly aided my learning. They are very detailed and correspond well to the text. Diagrams appear frequently throughout the text.
A few years ago, I studied biology at A level and feel this has benefited me greatly, especially as I have had to apply a lot of what I have learned to anatomy and physiology in my current nurse training.
Ross and Wilsons Anatomy and Physiology is a must have for all nursing students. It covers anatomy and physiology in both health and illness which I found very useful. It is very easy to read with glossary and diagrams throughout to aid learning. I found the book very helpful as it not only explains the normal structure and functions of the body, but also what takes place when disease or illness disrupts the normal processes.
The book is recommended ,by the authors, for a wide range of health care professionals including nurses, student nurses, students of the professions allied to medicine, paramedics, ambulance technicians and complementary therapists.
I found that the book covered all learning outcomes required by my A and P module. The book is very reader friendly being easy to read/understand, easy to navigate through desired sections and most important of all, meeting my learning needs in providing me with an effective basis for progressing through my nurse training.
The book also includes an easy accessible appendix stating normal values of blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, blood count etc.
Because the book is so detailed, I will hold onto it throughout my nursing career so I am able to refer to it at any time to help me further my learning.
There is also a section at the end of each chapter, related to each major topic, which allows readers to test their understanding of material included.
With 484 pages of detailed information about anatomy and physiology, from abdomen to zygomatic bone, you are sure to find everything you meet your learning needs in the subject.
Thanks for reading. This is my first book review. All suggestions are very welcome. I will take all on board and apply them to any further book reviews I write. (",)
This is a basic anatomy and physiology textbook which is easy to read. It is highly illustrated with 4 colour text boxes and illustrations throughout. In addition to covering the "normal" anatomy and physiology, each chapter ends with a brief section on disease which explains what happens when the "normal" becomes abnormal. The text provides the essential foundations of understanding for all students studying on health related courses.
