Saving Izzy is a must have read for anyone who is a dog lover

Saving Izzy: The Abandoned Dog Who Stole My Heart - Jon Katz

Saving Izzy: The Abandoned Dog Who Stole My Heart is a paperback book written by Jon Katz. I bought this book on a random lunchtime trip to Sainsburys for around £6 for the simple reason of the dog on the cover looked cute and he has the same name as my dog but with a different spelling.

Having never heard of, or read any of Jon Katz previous books I didn't know I was actually reading his books in the wrong order. Jon Katz is a writer from New York, he has written quite a few books portraying the stories and events from his real life experiences and his life with his family and dogs.

Saving Izzy is from a time after Jon has moved from New York to his small farm called Bedlam Farm. Jon has a love of animals and his farm is full of various breeds all with their own personalities who you will get to know as you read his books.

This book follows the story of Izzy, an abandoned Border Collie with a wild side. The book begins with a bit of background history about Jon's experience with dogs and Border Collies and how Jon and Izzy met. When Jon first saw Izzy he had been abandoned on some farming wasteland and spent most of his days pacing up and down the fence.

When Jon first took Izzy into his life and heart Izzy was around 3 years old and from what Jon can see, he has lived most of his life alone. Izzy being a Border Collie who thrived on companionship and work bonds with Jon so much so that he cannot stand the thought of being separated from him and risking being alone again. It is though this love and clinginess that Izzy provides some of the most entertaining moments in the book. The story follows Jon's life with Izzy from the early days of re-training this almost wild dog and gaining a trust and bond so that Izzy can fit in and become a practical part of life on Bedlam Farm.

Izzy needs to learn to not only trust Jon, but also other animals on the farm, this is the area of the book which makes it appealing not only for dog lovers, but for animal lovers in general as many of the stories in the book are of the adventures and mayhem involved with Izzy adjusting to his new life with other animals on the farm like Elvis the bull who comes charging down the field to great Jon when he arrives to feed him. Izzy must also learn to share Jon with his other dogs and form a bond with them.

I found this book to be a very captivating read, in general I don't really tend to read many books, but this one in particular really kept my attention from start to finish and I spent most of my lunch breaks reading it. I found it hard to put down and when it was time to go back to work I would be spending my afternoon thinking about the part which I had read and looking forward to reading the next part.

The book is based entirely on real events and contains some very funny moments which really did make me laugh out loud and as I dog owner and lover I could defiantly relate to. The book also contains some more serious moments and Katz doesn't shy away from reality when it comes to telling the stories of life on Bedlam Farm with Izzy. I think this is great though as I would personally rather read a realistic truth than a 'sugar coated' and unbelievable tale.

I particularly enjoy how Jon Katz not only tells you the story of Izzy and Izzy's life, but how he widens the book to include other events of the farm and other animals and sometimes the story of how he came to acquire the various animals. I think the book is extremely well written and due to the most of the farm being involved in Izzy's new life this makes the book extremely addictive and very interesting.

Saving Izzy was first published in 2010 and is printed by Ebury Press. I bought my copy of Saving Izzy in Sainsburys for around £6 and as far as I can remember it was around the same time that the book was released. It is currently available on Amazon for around £5 but I'm sure you will find a copy on eBay for less. I would defiantly recommend Saving Izzy, it is a really enjoyable read. You may want to research Katz's other titles first though if you prefer to read books in the order they were released.

A highly recommended and enjoyable read.

      Thanks for reading! :)
