I'm quite fascinated with the more macabre side of history and I couldn't resist buying 'The Gaol, The Story of Newgate, London's most notorious prison'. I must admit I was a bit anxious though, as I had recently bought a book on Matthew Hopkins, the infamous Witchfinder General and while the book was clearly extremely well researched, it was also extremely dull. Thankfully though, The Goal is both well researched and well written. Kelly Grovier doesn't use sensationalism, nor does he just list the facts in a tedious manner.
