The Great American Aran Afghan came about when Knitter's magazine featured a competition where readers where invited to submit patterns for squares 12" by 12" using Aran weight wool. 24 patterns were featured in the magazine over a number of issues, with the winner featured in the last issue, along with the border. Knitter's Magazine published all 24 squares and the border in this book, with mistakes corrected in the later editions. The idea is to knit all twenty four squares, sewing together twenty of them into the afghan, and four into pillows.
