I've recently been made redundant and was looking for something to read which might inspire me when I came across this in the business section of the book shop and inspire me it certainly has.
Wake up and change your life is not a self-help book or an autobiography of Duncan Bannatyne but is a guidebook on how to set up and run your own business. This book is choc full of usefull information about all aspects of starting a business from ideas on what to do, gaining finance and employing staff. The book doesn't assume you have years of business experience nor is it patronising in its advice. Duncan simply gives out information and advice drawn from his various experiences.
The chapters are:
Removing the Barriers - Excuses people have for not becoming entrepreneurs and reasons why you should
The idea - Various suggestions on businesses to start as well as hints for you to come up with your own
You - Identifiying your strengths and weaknesses
The Plan - How and why to write a business plan
Raising Finance - Options for finding the money to fund your business
Running your business - Types of comany, premises, hiring staff...
Growing your business - Identifying new opportunities, building the right team
Millionaire - The exit plan
Interspersed throughout the book are case studies of other successful entrepreneurs and how they made it as well as short "Bannatyne Bootcamp" tips.
I think this book could be a great help to anyone starting a business and you'd be able to revisit it as you progress
This is a book from Duncan Bannatyne one of the more aggressive of the Dragons from Dragons Den, a man who made himself be forcibly pushed from the Navy, he bought an Ice Cream van and developed a number of businesses now worth millions of pounds.
This book is a 272 page paperback which helps anyone thinking about starting their own business consider what is necessary, how they can achieve it and actually offers some resources (online sites, people to speak to) to help people achieve their dreams.
I don't actually think this book is anything out of the ordinary, it has been written a hundred times by people without the big man's profile, it is useful and definitely gives you some ideas if you are inclined to start a business, but as with any of these books, the key determinant in whether you can do anything is you.
The key to such a thing is motivation and the book does dwell on this, but also offers routes to assess what you are good (and not so good at), how you should consider what you want to do and how to achieve it.
The book is useful and offers examples from Bannatynes own life as well as from those of other entrepreneur's but I have read it before many times in other formats and as I was more interested in the changing your life part than starting a new business, found the title an ickle bit misleading.
The book is a reasonable guide, but its ethos is that hard work and dedication can make anything happen, but if you are a dedicated hard worker, you would know that anyway and not need a quick fix book to be a success.
The book starts well with an introduction to Bannatynes life, this is the most interesting part of the book, then there are sections on finding ideas for a business, thinking of your goals, setting up marketing, finance etc and then how life is as a millionaire.
Overall, the book does offer ideas so I won't knock it and people may be inspired by the name, but it has been done many times to similar levels by others with lower profiles and as I wasn't motivated enough did very little for me. The book costs £4.99 from Amazon.
Wake up and change your life
I am normally an avid reader when it comes to business and start up related books. This book from Duncan generated interest in me as it is directly based on experience of Duncan's evolving business prowess right from an ice cream selling van to a multi-millionaire.
He takes the reader through the straightforward steps to take to set off, run, cultivate and ultimately sell the business. The book urges you right at the start to take a closer look at your hindrance to start business. The chapter on idea will provide you avenues to look for new ideas or reinforce an existing one. I loved the suggestions put forth in the book to brainstorm and look for new ways to kick start business.
The book runs through a high intensity yet simple language to let you know how to build a business plan, market study and raising money for your business. I really feel that Duncan has explained each of these like a true business magnate.
The chapters on managing and growing your business get into in depth analysis of landscape of business but I find it bit dowdy as it delves bit too office site, admin and property management.
I was really impressed with the lay out of the book as it included real life fascinating examples from Duncan's own livelihood and straight talk from many entrepreneurs.
A real wake up call to be your own boss!!
If you are after the biography of Duncan Bannatyne then it's the other book you want, 'anyone can do it', 'wake up and change your life does provide the reader with some of Bannatynes history but it really focuses is on how to be a successful entrepeneur.
It interjects exploits of famous entrepeneurs, namely some previous dragons such as woodruff and james caan but also some other high achievers you may not have heard of. Their tales are really inspiring and
not only does it display the differences in backgrounds that various entrepeneurs have it also gives you a push to really get yourself going. If you are thinking of starting a business and have no idea how to go about it then this book provides some useful insights into some areas you may be unaware of as well as providing useful resources and website links. The wisdom given by Duncan Bannatyne in this book is something that you can not afford to miss, structured and presented simply it breaks down all the processes you need to not only get your business off the ground but to also establish what you really want out of running a business and assess yourself to discover what skills you may already have as well as those you may need to learn.
I like many people I have met over the years have dreams of one day becoming a millionaire by setting up my own company. So, feeling particularly unfulfilled with my current job for my last holiday I bought this book. I have always enjoyed Dragons Den and thought it might be a bit more interesting reading a book written by the grumpy scot Duncan Bannatyne than the usual business books.
The concept of the book is that starting your own business can change your life. It guides you through simple steps to setting up your own business and how you can ensure it is run as successfully as possible.
It is easy to read and avoids using business jargon. This book is a practical guide to making your fortune but only if you put in the hard work. He outlines the key attributes of successful entrepreneurs and tells you how to run a business once you have set it up.
The introduction is basically a brief look into Mr Bannatyne's life. Duncan started his business career when he was 30 when he bought an ice cream van for £450. He is now worth 310 million and has built several businesses from scratch.
~Removing the barriers~
This chapter takes a look at what is stopping you taking the big plunge. Whether that is a lack of time, you're unprepared to take the drop in salary or you have already started along a career path. Other things that may be stopping you are may be the support of your family, your past experience or your actual qualifications.
Here Duncan looks at the ways you can find the magic idea that will make you money, whether you business model is based on a problem solving business, a copy cat idea or a moment of shear innovation. It also looks at how to analyse your idea to make sure it is the right one for you.
Next this chapter takes inward look at yourself "the founder" and tries to analyse your strengths or weaknesses because most businesses fail due to mistakes the founder makes.
This describes how to start to write a business plan to attract funding from the bank. It takes you through the pitch, the idea, the market, possible revenue streams, marketing and operating your company, staffing issues, financial forecasting and an exit strategy
This gives you some ideas as to how to raise enough finances to get you ideas off the ground. There are many ways this can be done: selling your belongings, your savings, releasing equity in your home, borrowing from the bank or other sources of lending. Duncan takes a looks at the pros and cons of each of these.
~Running your business~
This chapter looks at all the items involved in the daily running of your company from its name. It takes a look into branding along with whether you set up as a sole trader partnership or limited company. It also gives you insight into your premises, staff, insurances, taxes, pensions and leave.
~Growing your business~
In this chapter Duncan looks at how growing you business is a fluid motion you should always be reviewing the situation seeing what are you getting right and where are you not performing. It looks especially at what you have learnt and missed and also what you should do next.
In order to become a millionaire it is customary for you to have a million pounds in your bank account. Therefore you have to be aware of the best way to extract money from your business. This chapter explains some of the ways this can be achieved.
~List of resources~
To finish the book Duncan provides a list of helpful resources whether websites or book in order to help you begin and run your own business.
I certainly found this book inspirational and after my holiday I was convinced I would try and set up my own business but to date I still haven't. So all I have really achieved is spending some of my hard earned money on the book itself and adding to Duncan Bannatyne's already bulging bank account.
