Halsall Wild World Magic Grow Dinosaur Egg
by cloud99 I saw a magic grow Dinosaur Egg on a car boot for 20p. While I had no idea whether it would work or not for 20p it seemed a worthwhile investment for an experiment. How do you grow a dinosaur? We followed the instructions on the pack .Firstly place in a container and fill with water till the egg stands up. We used a ... pint glass so that my son would be able to see the egg cracking. The water should be below 35 degrees but I simply used tap water. It advises that you should start to see the egg crack within 12-24 hours. We stated ours at 1.30 in the afternoon so was hoping that when we got up in the morning we would see some results however there was no change. I packed my son off to nursery telling him that hopefully something should happen when he returned home for lunch but still we waited. We continued to wait for 48 hours and still the egg was showing no signs of movement. We decided to crack the egg ourselves and although it felt quite plastic like I was unsure if it would crack but it did crack as a normal egg would. Once a piece of shell was removed the dinosaur poked his head out. So we put it into some clean water and put it back to grow. It did manage to break its way out of the rest of the shell. The final stage is to put him into another tray of water and continue to watch him grow. We used a sandwich box which did get spilt twice but the dinosaur continued to grow. Once finally gown the dinosaur had a cold clammy feel. He is very bendy and brightly coloured. The dinosaur does need to be kept in water to remain fully grown. Age recommendations The packaging advises that this item is suitable for children who are three years old and above. My son is four in three months time and this seemed to be the right age that he was old enough to help and generally understand you couldn't touch it .I think if he had been younger we would of experienced many spilt glasses of water. I think k also legs could easily be bitted off if you have a child prone to putting things in their mouth. Overall My son has thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a great lesson for him about how things grow and develop .It also taught him that sometimes you have to wait for the overall goal. My son was able to help in the process of growing the dinosaur. Although sadly the egg didn't crack itself I do not know how old the egg was but it didn't really interfere with my son's pleasure He has played with the dinosaur frequently since it has grown and even taken it to nursery to explain how he grew the dinosaur from egg. As the dinosaur needs to remain in water it slowly shrunk over the week. When it was quite small my son managed to rip the dinosaurs back leg but then this isn't necessarily about a toy to play with at the end but an experience in helping to grow and create something. I do recommend this for young children as it was a fun experience for both my son and I. I will probably buy him another at some point in the future but obviously not something you want to do every week. Availability I have found these available since purchasing on Amazon for £5.85 with free postage and packaging. But have also found them for buy it now on EBay for 99p with £1.49 postage and packaging. Read the complete review |

The Simpsons Inflatable Talking Bop Bag
by broxi3781 I bought the first version of this almost 4 years ago. It did eventually burst this summer, and I was lucky enough to find a replacement on ebay as they have become harder to find. We never have much luck with inflatables, so getting over 3 years of use, with one and then two boys battering this senseless, jumping on it and bouncing ... about the trampoline and generally climbing all over it is pretty good going in my book. This toy is recommended for ages 6 and up, but to be honest I don't see much older children getting a lot of use from this. My oldest will be 6 soon, and he does still play with it, but not nearly as much as he did when younger. He does like knocking it down so he and his brother can both ride this across the trampoline until someone falls off, and will knock it down a few times, but I can't see it being worth buying at his age. I would guess this to be about 4' tall, so it towered over my son, who when he got this on his second birthday. I have found young children either love or hate these bigger then they are knock about toys. I do remember one young relation being terrified of a clown toy like this. At first my son would just push him over and watch him bounce back up while shouting out one of his catch phrases "d'oh" , "ohhh why me", or "after lunch, can I whip you?". But as he got older he really loved battering this thing usually taking a running leap at it and rolling about the ground. By the time it finally gave way and developed a leak his younger brother had taken quite an interest in it, and ended up asking all the time for Simpson back, so I ended up buying a new one from ebay. The original cost me £2.00 in a bargain basket, but I ended up spending nearly £10 for a replacement, missing the voice box. Still I am happy enough with that price for a toy that has given the children so much active fun and has been very sturdy and well made. As mentioned this toy is roughly 4' tall. It is available with Homer in his classic jeans and white t-shirt, or boxing attire as seen here. There is a small pouch at the back which holds the voice box. I was able to just pop the box from the old toy into the new, or you could choose to leave this out as I can assure you, 3 phrases grow old very quickly. I believe the box takes 2 AA batteries which will last for years. The base of this toy is filled with water, which gives it the weight to keep bouncing back upright, while the rest is obviously filled with air. I can not really think of any drawbacks to this toy in our house except that it takes up a lot of room inflated, and it is nuisance to take down and fill up again - especially without a pump. I do think some very small children may be frightened of it bouncing back up, and there is a slight possibility of it knocking a small child down as it bounces about, especially if two children are beating it at once. I can also understand that some people will find this toy offensive as too violent. Other than that, I think it's a brilliant toy and a good way to tire the children out. Both my sons have really enjoyed it, and I am very impressed that it has lasted so long, so this gets five stars from me. It is occasionally available on Amazon or ebay, as well as various online toy shops. Prices can range from about £6 - £25. Read the complete review |

Candy Grabber
by jazzypinkpuppet I bought this candy grabber for my daughters 11th birthday, Inside I put coins, sweets, and other little goodies. Here is how we got on with it..... What is it? It is a mini version of those grab machines you get at the seaside. It comes empty so you can fill it with whatever you fancy. The aim of the game is to 'grab' a ... sweet before the time is up. How does it work ? The top of the machine comes off so you can fill it with whatever you like, sweets, chocolate, small toys etc. Don't fill it up too much or the claw will not have room to move around. To play you need to pay one coin, the machine comes with a little bag of plastic coins but they are a similar size to pennies so a 1p coin may work too. It takes three C batteries, these are fitted in an enclosed section on the base. When you have put your coin in the slot the music starts, you have to use the two little joysticks to move the claw and grab some sweets. One of the joysticks is left and right and one is up and down. If you haven't grabbed anything by the time the music stops then you have lost. You get about 30 seconds to do the grabbing, which isn't as long as it seems!!! If you do manage to grab something, you need to move the claw above the chute and when the music stops the claw will release the sweeties for you. Having a go - it is actually much harder than it looks, and can be incredibly frustrating when you nearly have something and the music stops. The music is traditional brash seaside tunes, which is fun but can add to the irritation after a while. The joysticks are easy to use and both my 11 year old daughter and six year old son could use it very easily. I would recommend choosing the items to fill it with wisely, some of the things I put in were just impossible to pick up and some were too big to fit down the chute. Good things I found were mini heros, candy bracelets, chocolate eclairs and hair bobbles. some of the bad things were coins, lolly pops, chocolate bars like penguins etc. and lip glosses. Was it fun ? Well when my daughter first opened it she loved it, she wanted to stop opening her other present s and play with it straight away- always a good sign. She really enjoyed trying to grab the goodies, she loved the music and was really excited when she 'won'. All the family wanted to have a go and it was definitely a hit - for five minutes ....... Unfortunately the novelty really wore off very quickly with this toy, once she had won a few sweets and lost quite a few times I could tell she was getting bored with it. Over the next few days my children played with it a few times, but then the seaside sounds became a distant memory, it was relegated to the bottom cupboard with no intention of ever being played again. Where can I buy it ? I bought mine off of ebay for £9.99 brand new, I think you can buy them on Amazon too. There are many different varieties available from shops such as Hawkins bazaar and the Gadget shop. It started out as a good fun toy but sadly lost its appeal all too soon. Read the complete review |
