A desktop conversion that works surprisinlgy well

Curling is has always struck me as one of the most bizarre of all televised sports (right up there with mountainbike bog-snorkelling), coming across as it does as a kind of professional-level floor-buffing. Star Case's desktop version of the game follows exactly the same format as its larger brother, requiring two players to try and hurl little curling pads (circular blocks with handles) across a low-friction pad ( a big plastic cover), with the aim of getting the pads as close as possible to a big bullseye and knocking your opponents pads away, whilst buffing the area in front of the pads path with a brush to control friction and thus control the pad's speed and ultimate distance travelled.

The game is quite large for a desktop game, and will take up a healthy porportion of your dining table, but then it needs to be this size to work really, and it mimics the game rather well, with the pads sliding across the plastic cover satisfactorily and in such a way that developing a skill at it does actually pay off, although im dubious as to how much effect the brushes actually have on things. Still, its fun to use them anyway, especially as they make you and the other player both look mildly ridiculous, leading to laughs all round.

The pieces are all fairly well made, with the pads having the neccessary weight to them to allow them to function as they should, and all in all this game is satisfying and fun to play, coming across as some strange minature hybrid of bowls and darts. Its a game that is suitable for the young and old alike, and is a game that requires skill to play properly. I picked mine up for around a tenner in a supermarket, and at this price its well worth getting.

Based on the exciting Winter Olympic game just roll your 'stones' (playing pieces) as close to the centre of the 'house' (target) as possible while knocking your opponent's shots out of the way. Game includes six stones (three per player) each with a ball bearing base for easy-glide movement. Includes a roll-up target that adheres instantly to desk or table and peels off without leaving a residue plus two mini curling broom pencils to help you keep score.
