=== Splat Stan Coaster by Suck UK ===
I've always had a taste for the slightly macabre and when it comes to anything that can brighten up the regular monotony of life I usually fall for it hook, line and sinker. Okay, it's slightly ironic that something as morbid as a small orange man crushed by a large drinking vessel can be uplifting in any way but it certainly raises a smile with me.
I first saw this on Firebox.co.uk and immediately pictured it in my lounge sitting underneath my Ghostbusters mug (okay so I'm a big kid). I couldn't justify spending £8 on a novelty item at the time so with what I deem to be a heroic show of willpower and restraint I added it to my mental wish list. Well, not so heroic after all as I was back two days later filling in my card details.
So what exactly is Splat Stan? Simply put, it's a coaster but it's a coaster with a difference. The Splat Stan coaster is designed to mimic an unfortunate incident where Stan has been crushed by a large mug of tea. Not a great way to go I'm sure you'll agree but one that induces slight amusement from me and many others who have seen him in my lounge. The end result is a semi-splatted corpse which you can use to place your drink on. It's clearly aimed at those with little regard for showy pretension and will appeal to those who like to take life less seriously and introduce a bit of black humour into their everyday lives. I agree that not everyone will appreciate having a miniature crime scene in their front room but it is purely tongue-in-cheek. This product perfectly appeals to my quirky nature and I am delighted to add Stan to my collection of novelty housewares.
The Splat Stan Coaster is manufactured from bright orange silicone rubber by Suck UK (an eyebrow raising company name, I agree). It measures roughly 15cm diagonally from Stan's right foot to left hand and has a large flat area acting as a coaster for your glass or mug. This area is 9cm in diameter so will be able to hold even the biggest of your drinking vessels. It is ideal for cups, mugs, glasses and bottles.
The unfortunate Stan who was clearly standing in the wrong place at the wrong time is completely smooth apart from two large crosses for eyes - just to clarify for the unsure that he is in fact deceased. He resembles a thinner version of the Plasticine character Morph, minus the jolly countenance, and has simplistic mitten like hands which I think a nice feature. This makes him look less life-like and ultimately less distressing in nature.
Facing upwards, the left side of his body has been splatted and extends outwards to provide you with a place to put your drink. Imagine slamming your brew down onto a prostrate Morph and you'll get the idea.
Fear not though because Stan's demise is not without benefit as in death he is incredibly useful as a coaster. Made from silicone rubber, Splat Stan provides a very good non-slip surface for your mug so it won't go sliding around and the coaster itself will stay firmly in its place on your table. Another advantage of being made from silicone rubber is that he is I think fair to say, indestructible. That is as long as you don't go at him with a pair of large scissors or toss him on the fire. But then hasn't the poor bloke suffered enough?
He's quite flexible and bendy as well and so you can bend his arms and legs slightly if you want. I've often amused myself by using his outstretched arm to fling small bits of paper across the room. Okay, so this doesn't say much about myself but I can assure you it is quite fun.
As for his actual purpose as a coaster, he performs admirably and has never let me nor my brew down yet. I have a wide collection of mugs all varying in sizes and shapes and each one fits easily on Splat Stan. I have even used Stan to hold my breakfast bowl which shows how versatile the coaster is. This will depend on the size and shape of your bowl though but I would say that you would get a fairly large bowl on Stan without any problem.
A small disadvantage is that Stan's body can get in the way sometimes (the non-splatted part that is). Some of my mugs have low handles and this prevents me placing them on the coaster with the handle above Stan's remains. In these cases I have to position the mug so that the handle is facing away from Stan. This is sometimes annoying when I try to put down my drink and the coaster is facing the wrong way. I then have to either move the coaster using my free hand or flirt with disaster by attempting to swivel the mug round in my hands. This isn't a great issue but puts him at a disadvantage to my other circular coasters. Of course this problem doesn't exist when placing a glass or non-handled drinking vessel on him.
Stan is very easy to clean which if you're anything like me and slop tea and coffee all over the place, you will be doing a lot. I just rinse him under the warm tap most of the time but when I've been particularly messy or if the spilt tea has dried I have to bring out the scrubbing brush and fairy liquid. A few seconds later and he's as good as new. He dries remarkably quickly as well because water slides off the silicone rubber a bit like it does off my Teflon frying pan. A quick dab with a tea-towel is all that's needed.
The only minor difficulty, if you can call it that, is cleaning dried drink marks out of the curved crevice that runs along the join between the splatted area and Stan's body. You may need to manoeuvre your scrubbing brush or dish cloth to get in there to make sure it's thoroughly clean. However, because Splat Stan is very bendy you can bend him out of shape to help you get into this crevice more easily. You can also just run it under the tap and use your finger as well if you are rushed for time or don't have a brush handy.
The Splat Stan Coaster is available from Amazon.co.uk for £5.33, Play.com for £4.99 and various other online gadget retailers for a similar price. It is a little cheaper than when I bought it a couple of years ago and therefore represents even better value. I would highly recommend Splat Stan if you can tolerate the black comedy behind the idea and wish to brighten up your room. It is similarly priced to many other novelty coasters and will provide you with a great place to keep your drinks. Cheers Stan...and hard luck mate.
For those that like the idea of Splat Stan I would like to also point out that there are other similar household items in the Dead Range by Suck UK. These include the Dead Fred Pen Holder, Dead Mark Bookmark, Mummy Mike Rubber Band Holder and a Hanging Harry Light Pull. Enjoy.
Thanks for reading :)
A lot of novelty toys strike me as a waste of money, but then there are the odd ones that I just see and absolutely have to get. Suck UK's Splat Stan Coaster is one of those things. It's a wonderfully simply and very amusing concept, namely a little plasticine-looking (but actually moulded plastic) figure lying flar out on his back, with the right had side of his body being completely flattened in just the right shape to place down a mug of coffee, as if it was you that murdered the poor little fellow in the first place by hammering him with a coffee-cup before he had time to make his escape.
It's a morbid but endearing little idea, that will appeal to anyone that has ever got momentarily irritated with Morph's indecipherable twitterings and felt a sudden urge to reach into the tv set and flatten him with a well-aimed fist. Whereas some of Suck UK's plastic figure range (eg their similarly flattened bookmark figure) come in garish colours, this one is a much less offensive (yet still very vibrant) orange colour, and is very well shaped, conveying the atmosphere of a plasticine crime-scene extremely well ("move along, move along, nothing to see here...").
It's pretty much guaranteed to raise a smile the first time anyone sees it, and as such makes for a great little present for anyone whose sense of humour leans towards the darker side, and whilst it is very expensive for a single coaster at over £6 plus postage, it is amusing enough to justify this price tag at the end of the day.
Alas, poor Morph, I knew him well........
After I got some bits made my Suck UK I decided to put my own order in for some stuff because I saw their site and thought the quirky things they have got for sale were brill. I gave myself a budget of £50.00 because their stuff isn't exactly USEFUL..... and anyway most of it is a bit expensive so I didn't get all that much for £50.00!!!
Splat Stan is one of a range of tragedy figures that you can get for round the house, I got a couple out of the set and they're big time fun! This is a coaster for your drinks, it's exactly the same as in the photo Dooyoo have got up. It's made of silicon but the effect is a lot better when you put a cup of coffee on the coaster.
I love silicon stuff and the only bad thing about this is the colour, I know that's a madly personal dislike to have but this is a proper weird orange colour and I think they could have picked a nicer colour. I think that must be something to do with this weird DEAD PEOPLE range though because the other item I've got (a bookmark) is a nasty yellow as well.
The coaster was £7.50 so I could only afford 1, it would have been good if I could have got everyone in the house one so they all matched.... if I'd got £30.00 to spend on coasters I mean!!!
If you use a big chunky cup it fits right against Stans body and with the splatter pattern of the coaster it does look like it's squashed the man! It's madly funny and I still laugh at it now even though I've had this coaster for ages now. We've got all different cups so they're different shapes, the ones that go thinner at the bottom don't fit dead tight to the body and even though the effect is still good it doesn't look like a proper splat! lol
It's a novelty though and people always talk about it, there's nothing too gory about it because you're not likely to come across someone who has been splattered by a massive cup. One of the range is Hanging Harry and he's a bit sick though, it's a light pull of a hanging man and I deffo wouldn't like to see him every time I went into the bathroom!
The silicone is dead strong and even though it's had LOADS of hot drinks on there isn't a single mark or anything on the coaster, I've washed it a few times in hot soapy water and it dries good on the draining board and still looks as good as new.
The coaster is 25mm thick and that's enough silicon to soak up the heat off a cup of coffee and it protects the table from coffee rings.
Recommended...... fun, it's just a shame I can't afford a set of them!!!
Splat stan has to be one of the worlds most unique coasters!! Made by Suck UK. Splat Stan is a coaster made of bright orange silicon - only available in this colour. The fact that he is made from silicone means he is bendable and very easy to wash. He is also very soft and very smooth to the touch.
Splat Stan is said to protect your surfaces against the general ring marks and damage you get from leaving cups here there and everywhere.True to form stan does his job.The silicon is about half a cm thick giving a good layer of protection. Also the silicon doesnt get warm or seem to be damaged by hot cups etc being placed on it - which i must admit i was dubious about. He is also scratch resistant and wont damage any of your surfaces. Stan can hold a standard cup/mug.
Splat Stan is meant to be represent a play doh man similar to "Morph", remember him? Unfortunately the poor little man has been squashed and part of him has been splattered everywhere. His "splattered guts!" will be the place where you put your cup down. It really does look like he was solid until you put your cup down. It is an entertaining coaster and brightens up a boring office space. It encourages the kids to put their drinks down on him too, giggling as they do so!
I got my Splat Stan from play.com just before christmas for a bargain of £5. This offer is often repeated. If you buy him direct from the suckuk website expect to pay around £8 plus p&p. It is worth every penny spent on it for the giggle you get from visitors!
In general it is a great coaster that will last a long time, is unbreakable and will go with any decor, also makes a good joke gift at xmas.
a caution for those trying to find the website, put suckuk in a search engine, dont risk putting it straight in unless you want directing to an adult site!!Will add the link to prevent this!!
Suck UK Splat Stan Coaster:
I came across this brand when I was in Selfridges a few weeks before Christmas ion the gadget section. I noticed this and I also noticed the book mark. I was so eager to get them, my Boyfriend kindly got them for me as a present! It is probably one of the strangest things I have ever used but the products are really weird. You can order goods from their website just google 'Suck UK' but you have to pay postage on top which can be quite expensive.
This is called Splat Stan and it is basically a coaster made from silicone which measures 115X130X20mm. I really like this because it looks really effective when you put a mug on it, it is almost like a man lying round your mug! It is supposed to protect your table from coffee or tea stains and it actually does that which is great. Before I saw these I would not have known anything like it but know I recognise them here, there and everywhere. I think they are a great design. They come in a plastic packet which tells you the ins and outs of the product!
As I said, I got this from Selfridges. But, you can get them from Amazon or the Suck UK website. This product was around £8.00 which was not too bad, it definitely does it's job and it never fails to grab guests attention. The only thing that annoys me is that I wish they did it in girly colours as it is not very attractive.
This makes one weird coaster and I like how Stan moulds round it! Brilliant!
