Amby Natures Nest Baby Hammock
by thecatsnose Sorry, the title is connected to the product in the loosest possible way, but it reminds me of my daughter! The Natures Nest is made by Amby and is a baby hammock suspended on a frame that mimics the movements felt by the baby in the womb, therefore soothe them to sleep. It is recommended for colicky and refluxy babies ... because the baby doesn't lie flat in the hammock, she is layed in a semi upright position and hugged by the fabric. Any slight movement by the baby will set the hammock gently swinging and bouncing, which should, in theory, send them back to sleep. The Nest looks great! I got it in white, and it is so pretty and looks so comfortable that I wanted to jump in it myself. It doesn't look out of place in any room and it doesn't take up much space either. I bought mine second hand so wanted to wash all removable parts and it was surprisingly easy to take apart, bung it in the washing machine, and put back together again. It appears to be held in place by a bow of fabric on either side, but it is actually held up by 2 heavy duty springs on a hook, and is very sturdy. The material is then tied to make it look pretty, and is actually quite easy to do. I found putting my baby into the Natures Nest very difficult. Because it is quite low, swings and bounces around and has quite close sides it is hard to lift the baby through the small gap. I found that once the baby was inside the nest, I had to reach in again and lift her further and higher so that her head was higher than her body, so I wouldn't recommend it for a baby that likes to settle to sleep in your arms first. Once the baby is inside and in the correct position, it does look very comfortable, but I was concerned that because of the incline her chin would sometimes be quite low and towards her chest which can affect their breathing. I didn't need to worry though, because my baby only did one 20 minute stint asleep in the Natures Nest before she realised i'd put her down. The Nature's Nest is recommended from birth to 12 months or up to 29lbs. I really can't see this happening. My daughter provokes comments of 'ooh she's tiny' wherever we go and weighs only 16lbs at 12 months old, but I couldn't imagine wrestling her into the Nature's Nest at her size even a couple of months ago. Personally I would put the baby to sleep somewhere else once they can roll because if the baby has a preference for sleeping on their stomach, it won't be comfortable doing that on an incline. If you are looking to buy the Natures Nest because you have an unputdownable, or 'velcro' baby I wouldn't recommend it. You will probably find, as I did, that if your baby won't sleep alone in the moses basket, swinging crib, cot or bouncy chair, she probably won't sleep in the Natures Nest either. In this case I would suggest a good sling and safe co-sleeping to save your sanity. If your baby has severe reflux or colic you might want to give it a try - it does seem to get good reviews for these reasons. To buy a new Natures Nest you are looking at around £150 to £200 including the mattress and fitted sheets. I bought mine second hand for £60, so I would recommend trying to source one this way and buying a new mattress from the Amby website for £21.99. I have given the Natures Nest 3 stars because I think it is a good idea and it looks pretty, it just didn't work for me and my baby. Read the complete review |

Amby Natures Nest Baby Hammock
by Padamae I had seen the Ambynest talked about on various baby forums that I use so when I got pregnant I decided that I'd rather have a hammock than a moses basket and crib. We were lucky to be able to buy one second hand as they are a bit pricey new and bought a new mattress for it. The hammock itself washes really easily so it actually feels ... like a new bed now. The hammock and frame are quite large and probably take up more space than a traditional moses basket or bedside crib but the frame will slide under the bed when not in use so can be tucked away a bit to give you a bit more space during the day. The frame is lightweight so it's not a problem to move around the room if you are pushed for space. I have found the frame and hammock very easy to take apart and put together and it comes in a handy travel bag. We have taken it with us when we have gone away and it is simple to take it apart and put it in the car. It is a little heavy when it is all packed up in its bag but with my new arm muscles from lifting a wriggly baby it's not a problem. Finally the main benefit of the hammock is the sleep! My daughter hates sleeping on her back and I spent the two nights we were in hospital holding her as every time I put her in her cot she startled herself awake. The sleep positioners meant that we could put her on her side in the hammock and she couldn't roll on to her front or back. She slept brilliantly right from being very small and when she does stir in the night it is very easy to just reach over and rock the hammock slightly which usually settles her back to sleep. She is now 3 months old and I put her down on her back but she usually turns slightly on to her side and snuggles down and goes to sleep. I do think she feels a lot more secure in the hammock and because of this sleeps much better, plus if she does stir then the hammock moves and puts her back to sleep. The only downside is that as she has a habit of throwing her arms around when she sleeps she does sometimes wake herself up as the sides of the hammock are closer than they would be in a crib. My only worry now is how we get her to sleep in her cot when she finally grows out of the hammock and moves in to her own room. I would highly recommend this product, I am sure my daughter's good sleep has been down to how comfortable and cosy the hammock is. Read the complete review |

Ladybird Moses Basket Rocking Stand
by chrisandmark When my mum bought David his pink Moses Basket (ha! You'll have to read *that* review for the full story!), she also chose a rocking stand to go with it. Made by Ladybird it is designed to specifically fit their range, but will also be suitable for use with other standard size baskets. The stand comes flat packed but don't ... let this put you off as it's very easy to assemble. The plastic 'loop' which keeps the basket on top of the stand was a bit fiddly to put together, but I have to say Mark managed admirably even with his ridiculously chunky blokes fingers! Well, I obviously couldn't help as I was in labour at the time! The screws and washers were all present and correct, I remember being glad that the basket was easy to put together as the (seemingly Chinese translated) instructions were not very clear and I really wasn't in the mood for listening to him have a paddy about different sized screws. Once assembled, the stand looks and feels extremely sturdy. It's made of pine which not only looks great but is also a smooth wood so no danger of splinters when rocking baby in the middle of the night. The rockers are well aligned to create a smooth and comforting rocking motion for your little one. Note the use of the word 'little', it's been a fantastic stand but now David is over three months (and sad to say, bordering on obesely fat) it doesn't seem as smooth to push and definitely requires more effort. Some stands I've seen, particularly of the rocking variety, are suitable from birth to three months - this one doesn't specify this but I suspect that would also be the upper age limit for this stand. Our slightly-longer-than-average Moses Basket fits perfectly on the stand, the basket actually rests on the stand itself with the plastic loop being there mainly to prevent it (and baby!) sliding off when you're rocking it. It's a great design in my opinion; safe, secure and comfortable for baby, which is surely the main consideration. The benefits of a rocking stand for your Moses Basket are incalculable, especially if you have a 'complainer' as I do with David. He doesn't just cry, he bellows instantly when he opens his eyes - crying babies don't bother me in the slightest, but at 3am it frankly takes the piss when I know he's fed and has a clean bum. With this stand I can doze in bed myself and use either a hand or foot to give him a gentle rock until he goes off. There isn't the widest rocking range as the rockers on the stand aren't amazingly rounded, it's perfect for newborns though as you obviously don't want to be rocking them too vigorously at such a very young age. I'll mention something here which should be common sense, but important enough for me to reiterate the point. If you have toddlers please, please, please watch them if they are rocking their younger brother or sister as the rocking motion can become quite harsh if you're not gentle enough in the first place. Poor David's head very nearly came off at the shoulders last week when I walked in to find Hollie 'kindly' rocking him with all the gentleness of a bull-elephant, he looked terrified when I rushed in to pick him up!
